getting started

Right now we are looking at starting a small home set up, however my goal is to convert my parents 10,000 square foot greenhouse that is currently a bedding plant business into a organic produce business... any suggestions!

A learning experience

So, I did this gardening last year and thoroughly loved it....I realize now that I had some awesome luck on my side.  I wasn't educated at all....hadn't found this site or was afraid to post because of my lack of knowledge and "good luck"  was with me anyway.  This year, luck has played a role again.....then I decided to expand.  Boy do I have a lot to learn.  Learning, however, has never been so fun.  I am the quiet one....silently lurking, reading, learning, slowly coming out of the shell,…

Soggy North Central Fl

All I can say about the last several days here in not so sunny North Central FL is ..............WOW. We left an upturned empty 7 gallon feed bucket out Sunday morning to get a handle on how much rain was going to come down.......its brimmed over the top.

Lost phone on monday afternoon, both land line and cell, different providers for each, but the DSL stayed on, albeit spottily. Got a little studio (jewelry making work done)  between checking stuff, and pumping water OUT of the fish…

Fire...

We have a arsonist it seems. The fire lines are still four miles away from us. However I have been on the oxygen tether much of the time since Saturday, and have not done anything to take pictures of.

Glenn's design drawings

Sylvia has posted my drawing of bucket siphons, air pumps and tea makers at http://aquaponicscommunity.com/page/glenn-martinez-aquaponics-manual. Enjoy. Some of the designs are "patent pending" but only for manufacturing rights. Individuals, non-protits and educational are free to make their own devices for use. It just when you cross the line to manufacturing that we need an agreement. Enjoy, these devices…

I started to cycle pool number two yesterday.

So far so good. The dogs hate it as they think it is the big bath time o' doom. Yes, they got the ritual dunk where everyone laughed at the wet daushunds... mortification is good for my little killer of rats.

Pool number one is so overgrown now even after a run in with roofers, and two back to back hail storms. I am finally going to take the plunge and start using them for food production.

Wish me luck.

Pool number 1 horribly overgrown…

Eating local hurts the planet?

Two scientists argue "food miles,"

the distance from farm to plate, is a worthless measure.

Article: Excerpt from 'The Locavore's Dilemma'

Interesting takes:

1- "The locavores’ only original addition to the rhetoric of past generations of food and environmental activists…

Okanagan Aquaponics

Good day everybody.

My brother and I have decided to get into food and fish production. We are embracing the aquaponics model. We love how it is a forced organic system. We also really love how it can be setup to be very efficient in both consumption and time commitment.

We have almost 3 acres in the North Okanagan Region of BC.. We are just now getting a small greenhouse to produce year round in a colder climate and are further to this looking to do it off grid.…

Raising Tilapia Fry

A friend recently gave me about 30 Tilapia fry.  It has been an interesting experience raising them from about 1/8" - 1/4" fry to seeing them double in size in the last week or so.  He also gave me a formula to feed them with: egg yolk, yeast, tropical fish food, and a little water.  Seems to be working so far!

I am blessed above all I can ask or think

Aloha eveyone

This is an update to my last blog about waiting.  I told you that I ended up getting the cinder blocks for 50 cents Well the price is now down to 50 cents.  I go to pay for them tomorrow before he owes me. Dave is the guy whotold me about how Cuba survived the last 40 years or so, with our embargo and the fall of the soviets.  He told me about the movie on You tube.  I watched it and was amazed. There was this guy named Roberto moderating the movie and explaining all the…

Aquaponic for business

Hi all hope you can help me ^_^

I want to start a small business using the aquaponic system in the UAE. Do you know how much will it cost and which method is the best for planting? Basically I want to plant vegetables and breed tilapia fish and sell it too.

Since I can’t find any company in the UAE sells the system I’m going to make my own system; any recommendation ^_^, pros and cons.

Thanks in advance ^_^

Been Busy

The month of May 2012, has been consumed with a major expansion.  I was able to make contact via a friend with a woman that had the metal frame and parts form a "hoop house" greenhouse destroyed in a hurricane sever years back.  As she was still being taxed for the structure, she was most happy to have me remove it. We did have to disassemble and take down one section still standing. It took us two days and I gave her a $50 gratuity, for which she was most grateful.  Problem was each…

Look for an aquaponic specialist

Hello Community I need to find someone who knows aquaponic Gardening that would like to be part of our team to bring aquaponics to Branson, Mo. as a very large, aquaponic food factory and educational tourist attraction. We have a prime location and 15 existing buildings. The state is holding a grant for us. We must submit to them a business plan based on their format. This will require us  (The team) to have someone who knows all the ends and outs of aquaponics. I have attached a story I…

FISH in the tank!!!

As of last Saturday, June 2nd, we have 20 tilapia fingerlings of various sizes in our tank.

They range in size from 1 1/2" to 2 1/2" in length.

At first they were pretty stressed out and would not eat for a few days. However, Tuesday they decided I was not a threat to them and they came out to see me.

As I dropped pellets into the tank they attacked it ... as if they were hungry or something.

They…

Green Acre Organics is NOW Green Acre Aquaponics!

Green Acre has taken on a new name and a new look!  When we created the Green Acre farm, our intention was to become a certified Organic farm as we thought that we needed Organic certification to secure higher prices for our product.  However as our farm and our relationship with our community evolved, it quickly became apparent that we had established a great reputation as the aquaponic farm growing all natural, clean, chemical free produce that provided just as much…
