How did you find us?
surfing aquaponic sites
Are you an aquaponic gardener already?
yes
If so, what type of system? (pick all that apply)
I have only being working at it for 4 months. I love to experiment to see what works best. My fish are very healthy, my water is good. My plants need iron I think. Does anyone know what type of iron is safe for the fish?
Please tell us something else about yourself.
I have lived in Hawaii off and on for over 42 years. The land is the love of my life. I really started going green about 10 years ago. I work in the medical field to support my fish habit.
I grew up on a 280 acre farm in Iowa and swore I would never be a farmer. I joined the Navy at 18 and beat feet out of Iowa. I ended up being stationed in heaven (Hawaii). I have left only once and will never do that again. Funny thing is I have become a farmer. I had only been doing aquaponics for a few months when I joined this site. Now it has been over a year. I now have 13 tanks all between 180 gals and 300 gal. I will have 17 when in a few weeks. I have a Masters in Biology and love doing experiments. My passion has transfered from parasites to Fish and vegetables. I just added some gravel beds to my farm. I had all troughs with rafts. I am now taking advantage of the WWOOFer program and getting wonderful help for my project. I love sharing aquaponics with everyone. I really love giving them some food off my beds.

WHAT DOES SUSTAINABILITY MEAN TO YOU?

Posted on April 30, 2013 at 4:05pm 2 Comments

As my Montonegra winter renter always says "different question".  He is 92.  Here is my different question, What does sustainability mean to you and what are you doing to bring it to fruition ?  This morning while collecting soursop fruit under the tree I had an epiphany ( a moment of sudden revelation or insight).  "Sustainability is happening at my farm."

I am raising chickens both for the meat and for eggs.  This sustains me but I must somehow sustain the chickens.  I am raising…

What I am doing preparing for "When The Lights GO Out"

A while  back I read a blog on this site called "What I Learned After The Storm".  These words still ring in my mind "learn to grow 50 things people do not know are edible".  I have repeated this often to people and to people who tour the farm.  They have deep meaning to me.  Permaculture says "a weed is just a plant in the wrong place.  I have learned to grow many things people do  not know are edible.  I am not doing it to keep people from crashing my gates but to share with everyone what…

WHY I AM SO VERY THANKFUL FOR AQUAPONICS AND LIFE IN GENERAL

Posted on November 24, 2012 at 2:41pm 1 Comment

Aloha everyone fronm the  land of paradise.  Everyone may not think it is paradise but to me it has been paradise since 1964 when my feet first toched Hawaiian soil.  I can remember almost 60 years later the very feeling I had when I stepped down from the airplane "My soul said you are home".  I left once for an extended period of time and regreted it for a lot of reasons.  One my health went to pot (deterioated) but most of all I mourned for 14 years for Hawaiil.  When I returned in 1998 my…

Sounds like a strange name doesn't it?  Actually it was a really big food thing combined with a sustainability event.  We were given the honor of having a booth at this event.  I t cost us $30.00 but that is because we were friends of the people who put it on.  We took 4 of our small systems and a solar generator.  We almost couldn't go because we had no source of electricity.  God at the last minute reminded me that my friend had a solar generator with a battery.  I knew she didn't like to…

Hey Raychel!  Tell me more about the Association.  I would love to get involved.  Believe me...we won't go big too fast.  We're still learning how to get our little back porch set up to work! =)

Aloha Raychel!

Thanks again for giving me a tour of your place back in June.  I will return soon once the plants I want to give you to add to your garden sprouts!  My dad and I really enjoyed visiting your farm.  My BSFL didn't succeed.  I'll tell you about it later.

Aloha, Jennifer

My wife recently informed me that our elephant ear is Taro.  Any thoughts on whether this is a tasty variety?  I assume you wait until it is dormant to harvest but am not certain.  Any suggestions?
