The result was the tasteless vegetables

Hai, Good Afternoon from Malaysia. Basically i did some research recently. In Malaysia, the farmers did try a hydroponic ten years ago .

The result was the tasteless vegetables .( not sweet)

Is it true that our aquaponic is tasteless as well if compare to soil grow vegetables??

The second thing is the water only can used for few times. and the water became polluted. polluted to environment as well.

The third thing is the vegetable shrink if fried, or withered ,dry…

Aquaponic Indoor Garden-raising fish-Low cost organic food little labor

This could be the best way to say money on Organic food and have it all year round with very little labor involved once you have set up your system. We all like saving eating great organic food and 25 square feet of space will feed one person. Use no soil and have a beautiful indoor garden or outdoor if you choose.

Musings and Plans.

Sometimes I feel like I am staring at a blank canvas. Well, mostly blank but easily corrected. I have a wide range of skills, growing up in a family of do-it-yourselfers and engineers will do that. I can pour concrete, weld, currently working as a plumber, frame, and just about build anything. I would like to set up an aquaponic garden for not just myself, but my father as well. You see he's been slowly losing his vision for the last 30+ years. He also was raised to take pride in the work of…

Brazil

Hi, I live in Brazil and have lived in the USA many years. I just found out about aquaponics and it has a great deal of promise here - we do not need to heat our homes here in the winter due to proximity to the equator, there is no shortage of sun, water and warm weather. Also fish farming is well established here with the main problem being what to do with the waste water. I want to learn about aquaponics on a small scale, then progress to commercial scale. I will have to source all…

This Makes It Even More Necessary to Develop Food Sources Free From Contamination

The story below states how the Fukushima Daiichi power generating station experienced a 6.0 magnitude earthquake today.  Apparently, we're supposed to trust the company, TEPCO, who has lied to us at every turn about the severity of the disaster, to tell us that there were no further complications from today's seismic events.  Every day that goes by where I don't have an aquaponics set up alive and well I feel more and more vulnerable to this man-made disaster.  It is quite serious, and…

BSF- AP'ers are so far ahead of the rest of the world

The reports of my death have been really overblown.  I have to admit, it was close.  Am home from the extended stay in the hospital after the surgeries.  Again the doctor's comment is that I am just too mean to die.  So, any way, was surfing trying to catch up and saw this on the collection of Black Soldier Flies.  To me it is amazing that others are just finding some of the things we have known for a long time.…

getting water higher using air pumps.

Jon has the right idea, dig a well or resovoir that is capped at the bottom.

We find 4 to eight feet is great.

It takes 1/2 PSi per foot of depth to get the air lift started. After the air is displacing the water, the water is lighter and it takes less air. A 5 psi pump is the strongest we have ever used. 5 psi will inject air in at 10 foot depth.

We use TWO inputs on heights over 20 foot.

Dig the well to say four foot, pump the…

MY FIRST SYSTEM

I BUILT MY FIRST SYSTEM LAST YEAR IN A GREENHOUSE. AFTER QUIT A FEW MISTAKES I GOT IT UP AND RUNNING WITH LETTICE. IT DID REAL GOOD UNTILL THE OLD DREADED ROOTBOUND SHOWED UP. THEN BAD PROBLEMS BEGAIN. I STARTED REMOVING PLANTS AND PLANTING STRAWBERRY PLANTS. I LOST ALL BUT TWO FROM A MISTAKE WITH THE BREAKER BEING TURNED OFF. NO WATER IS BAD FOR EVERYTHING. I'M IN THE PROCESS OF CHANGING TO A TOWER SYSTEM. THEN I'M GOING TO MAKE A BIGGER SYSTEM TO TIE TOGETHER.…

The pH Story

My API aquarium water tester and my new air pump arrived in the mail today. I immediately began testing my water to see how it compared with the test strips I had been using. To my surprise my pH level was at 8.2! What the crap?! The test strips gave me a neutral level this whole time! No wonder my sprouts have been dying off. I immediately knew I had to decrease the pH somehow. I began to think back and formulated a problem in my head. Here we go, back to general chemistry.

You…

Grow Baby, Grow

Well, it has been quite a long while since I have been on here. All is well with my little system.  I have had to add another light to keep up with the tomato growth.  I also built them a ladder to climb out away from the other plants in the grow bed.  Two of my three tomato plants won't flower and I'm a bit puzzled by why not. The third is chugging away producing tinny little green fruits.

I only have one plant left from my original four I planted, a parsley.  She isn't doing very…

It has been a year now....

We started our system in May 2012, so our system is now over a year old now. We learned a lot from this community and are glad we found you all. Our goal in the beginning was to teach our son's something of value (we home school). After the learning curve we decided we wanted to grow fish to eat and have fresh vegetables that are as close to organic as possible. We wanted the highest yield of each with the least amount of cost and work.

Our fish grew fast (We tend to over feed)…

Sharing Aquaponics is a treasure given for a lifetime.

The children race and giggle outdoors, and come inside for a meal.  They have every reason to truly give thanks for what they have set before them.  Normal children in every way.  They run, they play, they study, and sing and laugh.  Life was not so happy for most of these children, but now they have a chance for a good life ahead of them.  Many children in Honduras cannot say this.

You have an opportunity to be a partner in sharing Aquaponics! Worldwide Heart To Heart Children’s…

Final Step

I've been growing plants for a few weeks now.  I'm ready to add gold fish if all the chemicals and Ph are right.  Wish me luck.

Upgrading my Aquaponic System

Will be upgrading my aquaponic system next week to include another 275 gallon sump tank, 2 wicking beds, 3 verticle towers and another media bed. My 550 gallon system that is operating now only has 1 media bed, 2 raft beds and 175 gallon fish tank, just not working optimal. When all is completed I should be able grow just about anything, enough food to supply my family and then some. Also when complete, I want to be able demonstrate my system to others as a operating…

Sunlight vs HPS

I finally broke down and bought a real HPS grow light after growing a big batch of really long stringy pea plants that produced no pea pods. And while it is a very big improvement over the T-8 grow lights with year old bulbs I had been using, I can't help noticing that my outdoor peas are now kicking ass on my indoor plants even though they were started later. Of course, the indoor garden does have a pretty big edge in this area from October through March, but when it warms up it looks like…

Clones of Stevia and Tomatoes

Today made for a great day to clone a few new plants for my garden.  I have made it a practice to buy two plants and put one in the soil and the other in the A/P garden, but to take cuttings from both to get new starts.  The new starts are in soil pods and will be placed in both the soil and A/P Garden as they develop roots.

I have been successful at cloning Stevia, Basil and Tomatoes.  I am nurturing cuttings from my peach tree and various other herbs like oregano and thyme.  I hope…

Ratchet Strap Modification

Hello All

My first aquaponic set up.  I am addressing some valid concerns as the building has progressed and will continue to modify as suggestions come in.  I appreciate your feedback!  This is the ratchet strap modification for the buldging in the blue barrels that is a problem.  I went with a 14' ratchet strap and ran it through a 1" PVC pipe cut to each side.  I am hoping the ratchet will allow me to crank it down or ease up as need be.…

Giving Perch a try

After having some bad luck with the second batch of trout, I decided to give yellow perch a try. This is going to be a much longer project because the fish are smaller (3-5") and don't grow as fast, but the perch are doing well after the first few weeks. They ate very little for the first couple days, but now they are feeding eagerly. Some of the smaller ones looked like they couldn't handle the pellet size, so I broke some of them up and that seems to be doing the trick. Wish me luck!

Nutrient Cycle

Nutrient Cycle The BIG Picture

At some point, and sooner than later, we will have to face the fact that we are the biggest producers of nutrient dense waste.  We desire to eat nutritious food, often eating it to excess.  Our bodies only use what it can in that moment and the rest passes through.  So, with our rich diets comes an abundance of nutrient rich waste.

For centuries, and even today, human waste is used for agriculture.  You may…
