Please tell us something else about yourself.
I am attending Westminster College in Salt Lake City, Utah and I learned about aquaponics through my high school, The School of Environmental Studies. For two years I have been interested in aquaponics but only recently it has become a specialty of mine. I have been researching the topic through books, scientific journals, and online videos. I finally completed my first system with my 5.5 gallon tank. It's not much but I am limited to the amount of space I have. I also move on and off campus every year so I can't have anything permanent.

My ultimate intent is to bring aquaponics to Westminster College, to Salt Lake City communities, to give people an opportunity and interest in subsitance farming.
I know it may sound far-fetched but my dream is to be an aquaponics farmer, growing fresh high quality veggies for the public. I also wish to educate people on the potential aquaponics could have on their lives.

The pH Story

Posted on July 16, 2013 at 6:11pm 4 Comments

My API aquarium water tester and my new air pump arrived in the mail today. I immediately began testing my water to see how it compared with the test strips I had been using. To my surprise my pH level was at 8.2! What the crap?! The test strips gave me a neutral level this whole time! No wonder my sprouts have been dying off. I immediately knew I had to decrease the pH somehow. I began to think back and formulated a problem in my head. Here we go, back to general chemistry.

Joel my indoor system is about 3 months old and it is running pretty good right now.  I had a bumpy start and have lost a few fish.  Glad I got cheap ones. My system seemed to turn around when I put some tank bacteria in that I bought from Walmart.  I have 5 fish that are growing and eating like crazy. I have 3 basil plants, 2 tomatoes, and 1 sage in my grow beds.  I think more plants the better. Right now working on my outdoor system. Will post pics when I finish.
