Aquaponic Gardening

A Community and Forum For Aquaponic Gardeners

Hi, I live in Brazil and have lived in the USA many years. I just found out about aquaponics and it has a great deal of promise here - we do not need to heat our homes here in the winter due to proximity to the equator, there is no shortage of sun, water and warm weather. Also fish farming is well established here with the main problem being what to do with the waste water. I want to learn about aquaponics on a small scale, then progress to commercial scale. I will have to source all equipment locally due to the cost and complexity or importing anything. There is no shortage of talent in the areas of (low pressure) plumbing. welding (even stainless) round fiberglass open top tanks are umbiqituis here 500-5000 L. I will go today to discover what the ingredients are in commercial fish food, which is sold here at a very slight profit margin. You may find this funny, but if someone wanted to they could raise piranhas which are good to eat and would take care of table scraps of animal origin

Thanks for your comment It is not my intention to raise piranhas, so I probably should not have brought it up. What I want to say is that I am in a perfect location for aquaponics, but I know nothing about it and I willl have to source all hardware locally, Brazil is at near zero in aquaponics awareness.

People do raise piranhas in aquaponic systems. Well, they raise pacu, which is a close relative.
