Are you an aquaponic gardener already?
Yes, on a small scale
If so, what type of system? (pick all that apply)
I've got a 30 gal fish tank with decorative fish, and about 5 sq ft of growbed surface. I'm using a simple flood & drain with expanded clay. I started my system less than a month ago, and I'm currently growing basic kitchen herbs. I'm hoping to get comfortable enough with the process to expand to a larger system in my back yard by next year.
What type of fish do you grow with? (select all that apply)
Tilapia

2012/05/06 - Seedlings going crazy

Posted on May 6, 2012 at 11:00am 0 Comments

Haven't had time to do much, but wanted to at least post a pictorial update.

The seedlings are just going crazy.  Fiance had to move the peas away from the other plants so they wouldn't start climbing them.…

2012/04/28 - Wow, things grow fast!

First the BEST news: we caught the critter!  It's a rat.  Cute little bugger, but doesn't need to be in my garden.  I asked fiance to drive him to somewhere with a field and drop him off.  I don't feel any urge to punish him for being a rat, I just don't want him eating my veggies any more.…

First, check out the fish!  This was feeding time today:

They're all big, healthy, and hungry!

The leeks are beyond overgrown.  I'd left them… Continue

2012/02/26 - And we're back!

Posted on February 26, 2012 at 4:00pm 0 Comments

The weather finally warmed up enough, and I had a few extra oomph of energy, so we got things going again.

The critter (type unknown) has been ravaging the plants.  As soon as the broccoli gets the slightest growth he eats it.  It looks like someone attacked the poor plant with a weed wacker.  And the little *^$% is too wily to step into the rat trap.  But my dad is going to help us put up a "real" greenhouse, so that'll fix the problem.  When we finally get around to doing…

Hi Andrea,
I really appreciate your posting, it was step by step, complete accuracy, problem solving ,Etc… it is like a movie makes the person follow all details and live them.
Thanx

Why you stop posting ?
And other thing ,why no body show interest in having male and female fish for multiplying, at least I did not see any of this, only they buy them small and rise them,
why not starts with eggs and so on , it could be more beneficial as a commercial operation. ,and at one point you mentioned that you would sale the products ,Right.,?.
can I have your email,
Thanks
Mike

Hi Andrea..welcome to the community. Yes, I am a near neighbor in Palm Springs and I believe you have met Jeff from Cathedral City. Although I have yet to start an aquaponics system of my own, I am convinced that this concept can solve a great many of humanities food challenges. Happy farming!

Hi Andrea, no problem. the towers are a pretty new thing and I'm slowly getting information up. on them. I'm still figuring them out myself, but i dont' think you necessarily want to think of GB:FT volume as much as much as you want to think lbs fish/GB or tower or whatever- keeping in mind what's a reasonable stocking density. right now I'm running around 20lbs fish/5' tower (I don't recommend this). the towers should probably start around 5lbs or less per 5' tower and allow your system to mature. you probably don't want to stock more than 1 lb/10 gal. to start though, and only once the system is cycled.

Thanks Andrea! I like my towers too. They don't take up a whole lot of space- fortunately. I rent my greenhouse, so space is money. I"m putting in quite a few more towers next week. i'm getting too high a stocking density.

It looks like you have a great start on a system. what kind of fish are you going with?
