Dave L, Sorry to hear, really. please, do not rush into too many fish. It takes a lot of time and effort to get a system running in balance. As I understand it, you have a 330 gal tank setup. I suggest you get that running in balance with your 10 fish. if I can do anything, let me know.
Today was a major disaster. I have had my fish 5 months today, making them just ove 6 months old. I have had an occasional dead fish in my large out door tanks over the last week to 10 days. Today I found the vast majority dead. I have managed to save about 10. What blew my mind was, I thought I wasn't runing my circulating pump long enough (6 to 8 hours daily) so I left the pump running all night. Anyway I emptied my 330 gallon tank. A lot of sludge (decomposing fish food) on the bottom. Still had some live fish along with dead fish in my 100 gallon and 250 gallon tanks. Rescued what I could and began to pump down and syphon water from these tanks and introduce fresh (well) water into the tanks. Tomorrow I will clean the sludge from my 330 gallon tank and flush it, then refill it and put the remaining fish back in. I hope I have some females that have survived.
Conclusion I came to is insufficent plants to keep the water clean and failure to run the circulating pump long enough. Note I started with 220 fingerlings all in the 330 gallon tank. I move out 85 into two 250 gallon tanks a month ago, but had no way of circulating the water.
I had 2 male runts. I seperated them from the others. one became a bully, I moved him back in with males only. I moved my smallest female in with the one that was beaten-up. They play great, fun to watch
thanks I have a few more breeders but they are not doing any thing yet.
Lonnie, all i get are false labors.
you are the meanest guy on here.. ha ha
kudos dude
that is the best thing to know
find what works well for you.. I have changed many things including my auto siphon
to ways that work well for me
I'm in Inland central Florida doing flood and drain aquaponics, even in a greenhouse here, without active heating, tilapia didn't survive for me two years in a row. Catfish not only survive for me without heating, without a greenhouse but they thrive for me.
find what works well for you.
TCLynx why dont you like Tilapia and Im working on the permit have to call again tomorrow.
Well the comment walls are on "groups" this happens to be the Tilapia group.
I started a group for Bluegill so if you were to post on that comment wall it will become more active or you could start a Bass group yourself and invite people to join and comment. Posting in the tilapia group about it won't help the activity level in other groups though.
