I finally added some Tilapia to my system- #20-  2-1/2 inches - 3- 1/2 inches. I was told by the seller that 90% of them will be male. He also told me to look for fish that start turning pink- they are the females... My question is -

1- At what age do they have to be to start breeding?

2- Is it necessary to have a seperate breeding tank?

3- Can/will they just breed in the AP system reservior?

Sorry, I don't have any pics. The huge fish likes to hang out at the top in a corner of the IBC. The large fish seem to like the bottom or middle. I have seen the babies near the top at times and then they disappear at other times. I I could breed them in a glass aquarium the visibility would be much better

I am fascinated by this topic! What are the conditions for breeding? When and how do you separate? Do you need any plants or structures?..I guess I better read up on this eh?...hehe

I had no luck breeding tilapia indoors in an aquarium that was supposedly 50 gallons.  Many things were against me though.  Indoors I didn't have much luck getting 86 F water since I didn't want to heat the aquarium much.  I had much better luck when I moved the fish out to a 300 gallon tank and the outdoor temps here gave me 86 F water.  I just tossed 12 random blue tilapia into my duckweed pond and had tons of babies several weeks later.

How do I get started breeding tilapia in glass aquarium indoors in a bright back room? What is the minimum size that I need, and how many boys and girls?

I just saw a little school of tiny fish in my breeding tank that has about 6 large wild- caught  tilapia. But I am unsure if they are tilapia or some stray mosquito ninnows that are in my system to keep down monquitos. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they are the real McCoy...Hope they don't go down the overflow to my growbed!

Thank you...I would love to learn from you...my Tilapia also gave babies although we did nor have such a fab' survival rate.

Here's a really cool video of one of our female tilapia releasing the fry from her mouth and then calling them all back into her mouth.  This fish had 850+ babies when we finally counted them a couple of weeks later with a near 100% survival rate!

One of the things I enjoy most about aquaponics is the raising of fingerlings.  Watching the various stages of development from eggs being laid, fry first being released by the mom, fingerling stage and finally to brood stock age.

We have a couple of 135 gallon aquariums set up siphoning to a clarifier and then out to our grow beds. Many of our female fish will eat right from our hands...they have been named and will never meet the fry pan!

Would love to exchange ideas, pictures and experiences with others that enjoy the breeding side of aquaponics.
