@TCLynx - Because my tanks are under roof on my back patio they don't get very hot. This summer they hovered around 78 - 80. I wonder if the temps in the upper 80's and higher have an effect on the females egg production. I'll do some research on this and let everyone know if I find any information on it.
@Dave Story - Do you have a picture of the blue/green tilapia? I wonder if they are standard blues or perhaps a hybrid of some kind. If they are standard blues then you have plenty of options for getting more of them.
when i was in ar. raising tilapia, i had 13 1/8 acre ponds that i was going to do 13 hybrid x es, while i was pumpimg up the ponds, getting them ready, i hade my brood stock in 13 raceways,4'x4'x50' sexed, well water 72* [they spawn in the raceway before i could get them out] i also had another hatchery, where i was trying to spawn all winter, in 90* water, both systems spawned at the same time, proving to me the p

Howdy SW,
to date my best teacher has been youtube. thank you for the help. I will attempt to sex my fish this weekend. I have 43 tilapia that are white, 4 that are gray, and 3 that are beautiful blue green. I purchased 50 whilte nile tiapia, but... I understand it is difficult to find females. so if I find any I will do as you suggested and I will move them into the house with a temp controlled water of about 75 degrees f. I would like to buy 4 of the blue green tilapia females. Any suggestions?
thank you
Dave
Hi Dave. There are plenty of people in this community that can give advice on breeding the tilapia. What type of tilapia do you have? Were they all from the same parents? Do you know how to sex the fish? 3-4 females with a male in a 125 gallon tank in 72+ degree water with some kind of structure like old flower pots or pieces of large pvc (so they feel safe & comfortable) is sure to do the trick.
