I finally found a 125 gallon glass aquarium that I want to use to winter my breeders. I will put my  3 or 4 broods of frys in a smaller aquarium. I want to set it as a breeding tank. How best to design the system so that I get good waste removal and water treatment and at the same time don't disturb the fish breeding process and loose eggs and small fry. I noticed many indoor reef aquariums use a sump that treats the water. I don't want to build a sump tank if it is unnecessary and there is a simpler and effective way of breeding them.

High protein feed is important to small young tilapia if your goal is to grow them out as big and as fast as possible.

they are hungry for protein we feed them in the morning and wen we come back from work but that slow the grow rate very much so we add a feeder that feed twice a day wen we are not home this way they eat 4 times a day plus treats. and all look good.

My experience is they always seem hungry and I over feed them. I feed my fish four times a day.

well I have a lot of Tilapia now I have 100 in totes in my garden there about 6-8 in long my one group of breeders is getting it done and I have all kindes of little ones check out my pict. still could use a little advise on how much and how often to feed them worried it might be to little

i am raising some red nile to brood fish, i"ve had them for two months, when i got them they were 1"-1.5", they are 3.5 to 5 inches now, i cut the bottom off figuring they are my females, i have acceleratored their growth, by cranking up the heat 90*, and feeding them 10 times a day, the middle class i"m holding at 82*,feeding them 6 times a day, the top of the class i"m holding at room temp, 75* and feeding them 2 times a day, i know they are males because they are big enough to sex, what i"m trying to do is get them all the same size by spring, i feel they breed better when the fish are all around the same size, a larger female dosen"t produce more eggs, just larger eggs ,and larger fry! i'm trying to get them to all spawn early this spring so i can coincide with the hot fl. summer, and by fall to sell my first batch of fry at 1.5 lbs, all of them, and only over winter  next years brood fish , to start over again!     greg

Today the water temp. in my 40 gal aquarium was 74 F and in the 20 gal 76F ammonia was a little on the high side.  So I drained 1/2 the water from both tanks.  I replaced the water with heated tap water (well water) result was 20 gal came up to 86 and the 40 gal warmed to 84.  Immediately I saw greatly increased activity.  Tonight fish were still very active.  Looks like I will need to invest in some tank heaters.
