Today was spent scrubbing out my aquariums. Getting everything squeaky clean. I coved 3 sides of my 20 gallon with decorative marine scene paper. This should reduce algie. After reviewing several postings I used set in a light layer of gravel on the floor of the tank.
Next I cut the lower half of a 1 gallon Arizonia Ice Tea jug, off. I then drill the sides and bottom with a series of 3/16th holes and filled the jug with about an inch of gravel. I then set my 70 GPH fountain pump on the gravel discharging the hose with a fountain fitting back into the tank. Hopefully this should filter most of the heavy sediment. Cleaned my air stones and filter refilled the tank and installed what I believe is 3 small females and a good size male. Put in a 200 watt tank heater set at 86 degrees, and placed 2 1 foot lenghs of 6 inch PVC pipe.
Now with some luck lets hope the fish get romantic and start reproducing.

Love the story
I started with 50 White Nile's and 2 100 gal tanks 6 months ago
now I have 5 fish tanks, but only using 4.
I have had my fish now a 4 full months, having picked up approx 220 fingerlings on July 20th.. I would estimate I have lost about 70 fish most within the last 30 days, with about 50 plus dieing, in my two aquariums the big culpert was the 40 gallon tank. Due to over crowding. I have two out door tanks. A 330 gallon tank and a 100 gallon tank that are used to feed my 4 grow troughs. In the last couple weeks I began to loose fish in my 330 gallon tank. I recently purchased 3 of the metal frame polly tanks. These were 1,000 liter 250 gallon plus tanks. I have success fully move all fish from my 40 gallon aquarium (about a dozen) with the ballance to total 50 fish into the new 250 gallon tank. This morning I plumbed my bulkhead fitting, discharge valve and fabricated an internal filter.
What blew my mind was to find some fingerling size in my 330 gallon tank with some 6 to 8 inch fish. I don't think I have had any reproduction, but who knows.
The game plan is to have each of these 250 gal. tanks feed 4 grow troughs. With a view to pick up 2 more of these tanks. This would provide an additional 20 grow troughts. I plan to enclose these tanks and grow troughs within a 24 x 42 green house..Object will be to complete this over the next year. Of course this will require the cooperation and reproduction of my tilapia.
Lettuce growes extremely well. I have cherry tomatos and green bell peppers doing well. Snap peas are productive and rapid growing. I have carrots and eggplants comming up and have recently planted full size tomatoes. String beans turned out not to do well.
This has been one big panic driven learning experience. Once the construction is completed things are pretty much on auto pilot.
I'm off to feed my fish.
I have tried severy nets
the best thing that works for me is to lower the water level
catching fry is easier said than done. i am currently faced with that problem as I need to remove fry from my 125 aquarium to give breeders some peace and quiet.
Am currently working on a 3' long net made from two yardsticks. Hopefully I can get completely under the school and just lift along sides of aquarium...wish me luck!
hi Shavanie,
You can gather the babies an put them in a small aquarium w/air pump or feed your fish regularly enough so that they won't be quick to cannibalize the small girls and boys.
The adults don't seem to eat the babies much. However, older babies love to eat smaller babies.
