Thanks Sheri:  I started with a pair  real light in color about a week 10 days ago.  Today I a half dozen. But I have yet to spot any eggs or fry.

I am trying to maintain water temperature between 82 and 86 degrees F.  Because of the freeze last night temp fell to 74 degree.  I managed to get it back up to 78 by mid afternoon.  And I have had my fish  7 months next week .  I am looking for reproduction since I suffered a major fish kill in November.

Yes, my Nile tilapia do. The two who are breeding, or those competing for top billing (which is like claiming the I-own-the-nest-and-will-breed-next position), will turn white, often with black contrast on their top fin. But the breeders will chase the others away, and those fish will turn very dark, like they're trying to hide. I put pictures on my profile page if you want to compare yours with mine.

I will say, though, that I'm still learning almost daily about their behavior. They are peculiar creatures!

Question...do tilapia change color when they are ready to breed?   I am experiencing my fish are becoming almost white.. they have changed from their normal dark brown to becoming very light in color/

Congrats Avery! Now that they have the hang of it you'll probably have a lot more soon!

My mating pair of Tilapia finally had babies! They had been separated from the rest of the group of 20 about 6 months ago. I had given up hope on them breeding, so I purchased a new batch of tilapia fingerlings for the next year of food. Then today I noticed little babies swimming around in the tank. I quickly moved the fingerlings into their own tank, and the fry into a separated section of the tank.

Maybe it was hormone induced when the other young ones were present, or maybe it was just baby fever. But now Ive got over 100 tilapia fry! Looks like I need to build some bigger projects this spring....

Yesterday the water temp got above 70 and for the first time in quite awhile the tilapia ate aggressively. I only lost 2 when the water was 48 for those 2 days, where I live here in central Florida it gets a few degrees colder than Orlando. I was talking to a local Police Officer who lives just a few blocks away and he told me for the past 6 years he's been catching tilapia out of Little Lake Harris, which is several blocks away . Even if I loose my breeders he'll help me catch replacements. I have set up a dedicated 250 gallon tank for a breeder colony so this year I'll have some fry.
