'His Way Produce' in the FL panhandle

Hi, I've been up in the Fl panhandle for the last few weeks. My buddy and his wife live in Cottondale, FL. I went up there to help them add an aquaponics system to a green house they were buliding.

While there, we took a few days to build a small aquaponics system for thier churches' produce stand.

The produce stand....His Way Produce, is a ministry to the local area. They are helping to feed lots of folks in the area, that are in need.

The property,  that the…

Learning aquaponics from 'Mr Vertical'...aka... Sahib, The Urban Guru.

Learning from 'Mr Vertical'...aka... Sahib, The Urban Guru.

I've been having the pleasure of working with Sahib, 'The Urban Guru' for a few weeks now. I believe Mr. Cosmo 1st called him that, in one of his great blogs.

Sahib is busy adding a 'new section' to his 'urban experiment.'  He calls Phase 2...'Vertical Mania'....lol. I love it.

If anyone…

"Your probably not Crazy''

'Big Momma' is the 'boss' in the tilapia's breeding tank. She'll let the male chase her around for awhile. Eventually she tires of that and turns around and faces off with him. She's about a third bigger then he is. He's finally figured out, that she is the 'boss'.

The other day, as I walked by my breeder tank, 'Big Momma' thrashed the surface of the water. She was trying to get my attention...I guess she was hungry.

I reached over and lifted both lids, I looked around for the…

Why do I bury my pipes ?

I had a guest touring my AP set up and asked.....' Why do I bury my pipes ?'

For a few reasons.....

First, It does protect the pvc from UV rays. Pvc will 'eventually' become brittle. I do paint what pvc is exposed to the sun. A little 'planning ahead' and it can be done 'prior' to being installed.

Electrical pvc conduit is UV protected...plumbing isn't.

Second, Since 'most' of my lines are gravity fed and /or 'water seeking it's own…

Finish my coffee first

The other morning, while I was drinking my first cup of coffee, I thought... "I'll get an early start, before I'm completely awake." I just wanted to get my least favorite part of aquaponics done. The dreaded cleaning of filters.

I finished the indoor ones with no problems. Then I moved to the outdoor system.

Normally, I just drain a gallon or two of water out of the bottom of my swirl filter into a bucket. Then I dump it on some of my plants in the dirt garden.

This…

Wash that strawberry !

A friend sent me this link on washing strawberry's with 'soap'. At first, I was kind of skeptical. After watching the short video....I was asking my self..." how many of 'those' have you eaten in a life time ? "

Good grief...I normally just rinse them under running water.
