Hi I am new and just researching my systems before I put them in. I plan on eventually having at least one large greenhouse full of aquaponics. I Live in Virginia and where as it doesn’t get too cold…Continue

So I bought a 45W photovoltaic kit from Harbor Freight which comes with its own charge controller ($139 on sale), a used deep cycle battery with 135 amp-hours, and a 1.6 amp DC pump that moves over…Continue

Pump power load on my SAP (Solar Aquaponics) system - rough calcs: I just put the system up last week, and just put in a kill-a-watt meter on Sunday. The meter is showing 200 watt hours in 24 hours…Continue

Bob: Two would be a small fraction of what is needed. You might manage to get by with 10 of them but I doubt it.
Was wondering what you all thought about these 2 pumping systems for my aquaponics system?

It will be a 250 gallon fish tank with a 4x4x4 flood and drain growing bed above it. I really want to try and make this a stand alone system without the use of AC if possible. Any comments or suggestions would be very helpful.
Thanks
Looking to buy wind or solar kit something big can some body help
You are so right Root Doctor, and this is the forum to voice those alternate veiws for all to hear, and learn, and share. Lets not reinvent the wheel! lets perfect it! with input from everyone
yes, they're not for everyone. not yet anyway. but windmills, foot pumps, merry go rounds all are important free energy devices. unfortunately solar pv is not practical in regions and you'll have to be sure to purchase enough battery juice to operate power at night and get you through cloudy spells. manual alternatives and backups will one day be a necessity.
Hey Root Dr- couldn't talk my wife into treadling. Guess I'll stick with my solar panels and and pump.
We've been encouraging clients in Off The Grid environments to use a treadle for pumping water. Between this and supplying urine from human source rather than fish which require aeration you can grow plants in ebb and flow systems without electrical energy requirements.
Alas, putting solar panels in the 'leaf' positions on an idealized tree can't produce more energy than a properly-aligned planar array. I was scratching my head on this, then saw the link labeled "Disagreement over the discovery" which quotes the blog The Capacity Factor as saying:
The blog does not blame the seventh grader for imperfect science [measuring voltage rather than power], but actually the news media for blowing up this story and putting a 13-year-old into the spotlight for an impressively ambitious but unfortunately incorrect claim. It ends with this open question: "How did this confused science project became international news?"
i think i got beat to the suggestion of a windmill to pump water. They've been used for thousands of years, and way before we figured out electricity was a useful thing.
better than a wind generator, imo.
