Michael Welber replied to Aqua Dan's discussion Using ro water
"I'm using water from my cistern and it works great. HOWEVER, originally it tested high in zinc and many fish died. I bought a metal filter from Pentair and SO FAR no dead fish. So it's not RO water but rain water, which is better.…"

"Greetings Dan! I live in the Keys and have a similar setup though my tank is 300 gallons and I have 25 tilapia. I am using two towers but have them drain into the sump. How does draining them into the grow beds work for you? I put a small pump into…"

"Yes. That's my experience too. I just switched them from fingerling food to the larger variety and they've been very slow to take to it. My last batch of fish would never eat the BSF. "

System shut down for three months but wondering if I need to cycle it again

I'm restarting my aquaponics system (I live in the FL Keys) and wonder if I need to cycle it again. I added ammonia three times but no ammonia appears in a water test. No Nitrite too but there is about .25 Nitrate. I wonder if it's already cycled and I can add fish again. Any ideas on this? I hate to keep adding ammonia (though I guess the fish would anyway). See More

With getting new fish, it is pretty normal to loose a fish or two just from stress of transport so it might not even be the cold that caused it if you got the fish only a few days ago.

Water temps above 60 F you should be safe but with small fry, you want to get the temp over 70 so you can be feeding them well so they can grow to be able to survive cold spells.
