Bluegill or Bream Growers

The often overlooked fish option that can handle the high temperatures like tilapia but also the cool temperatures like catfish but still be small enough for a 100 gallon tank and acceptable to eat for people who refuse fish who lack scales.

I called my local Southern States. Here's the link to their storefinder. The Southern States pond page says:

"Southern States dealers sponsor a Fish Days promotion where pond owners can order different species of fish to stock their ponds. Check with your local Southern States dealer for the Fish Days promotion in your area."

I recently added 60 (2-3") BG to my 700 Gal system (250 G FT) and will be adding 50 more very soon. I had Tilapia before but switched when temps dropped and all 128 tilapia died.  My question is, I…Continue

Best method to catch them is with a net.  The guys at my local fishing spot try to find a specific kind of fish to catch the bass, and they will pull up HUNDREDS of these that are about 2" long because they just sit there like dummies.  Throw some bread in the water and once they are all there you can just throw the net in.  FREE FINGERLINGS! I bought my first set of fish on 18 March. Due to doing many, many things wrong, only 8 of my ~25 blue gills survived. The minnows have done OK. The redears all died (the lady today told me they only eat live critters on the bottoms of ponds - oops).

Today I bought an additional ~50 bluegill and they're all pretty happy in the 150 gallon tank I've got in my backyard. The smallest of the new acquisitions is about 2 inches long. The largest survivor of the freezing month is something like 7 inches from nose to tip of the tail. No freezing temperatures projected and all the "wrong" things are now fixed.

I have about 100 BG in my 600 gallon AP tank.... I have a few that are over 1lb and are right at 1 year old.. .so in another 6 months or so... they all should be a good size....  now my biggest catfish is about 16" long.....

I am raising One yes one blue gill. Rescued by myself, from a 10gal tank in a coffee shop. The person who placed it in the coffee shop said that damn beast survived nearly anything! One with a rather checkered past. It has traveled from fish store where arrived with the feeder goldfish and into the hands of a fresh water tank enthusiast. Where it lost all its fins, grew them all back, was baked in the hot sun, and frozen, 2 years of pure hell,  Well its very happy eating in my tanks. It ate all the other small fish and then some. It wont eat cat food, can't stand chilid food, and waits patiently for bugs. It is an insectivore. I now feed it worms and crickets and anything from the garden I find. It's very happy and spoiled. I too am curious about the feasibility of raising these on smaller systems.

I've got a few minnows in a raft bed to take care of mosquitoes.

I've known some people to grow goldfish, mosquito fish, fathead minnows, but usually they are an add on to a bigger system or a start up system.  You could grow a few edible size fish in a 55 gallon tank but you are right that it would be easier to grow smaller fish in such a tank.  That in mind, blue gill are not super fast growers so some of them in a 55 gallon tank would be ok for a time.

I have a 55 gallon tank to a media bed just to get started. Probably too small for any fish of substance. Some have suggested molly's.  Has anyone ever tried bait fish?

I have raised hybrid bluegill, hybrid sunfish, bluegill, sunfish, and pumpkin seeds.  If anyone has any questions, I will try my best to answer them.  Good luck!!!!
