Starting my first system and need advice on media and where to find it. I'm interested in expandable clay media but just read on the Internet that it's no longer available from the manufacture any suggestions??? Then I'm ready to start the system and search for tilapia in my area.

Wilson Lennard has a calculator and instructions to determine the right ratios in an AP system to make sure everything is utilized. Might answer some questions.

The biological filter is what makes AP so interesting. Just put a bunch more worms into my media beds and started another 12 gallons of worm tea brewing. Was out watching :-B the worms cruising among the roots of my cucumbers, swiss chard and basil. Checking for night roaming bugs and set up a beer trap to see if there were slugs and made a similar trap to try on the ants that want to farm aphids. Now if I could see the bacteria too. Yup the biology is a big part of it.

@jim hall.. I brought up the term "aquaponics" at the local nursery, and received blank stares. Then I described what it was, fish and pka Ts grown together, then the flights in their eyes came on. I know that they have done this method of gardening years, but they happen to call it using a "biological filter".

I have been looking through the photo section and I see a lot of people are using IBC containers.  What does IBC stand for and where do you find them?

The University of Hawaii Atoll online program is one spot to learn and only $100 to take the course.
In one of the videos, Wilson Lennard Phd brought up in one of his talks about how amazed he is that everyone wants to reinvent the wheel with aquaponics. Knowledge is out there, but so many of us, me included, seem to want to make it work from scratch and try new ideas that hit us in the middle of the night. Human nature?

You can learn it all online, it just takes lots of time and sifting through tons of information and sometimes some guess work to figure out who actually knows what they are talking about and who is full of bunk.

@ John, thats the point of the fourms, ask and receive. the only dumb question is the one you never ask.
