Dukie,

    Systems can be outdoors or indoors or in greenhouse depending on climate, fish and crops and situation.

Fish tank size will be important in a place where the daytime highs get really HOT but the temperatures drop down at night.  I like to recommend at least 300 gallons worth of fish tank for outdoor unprotected and not temperature controlled systems in my climate (I'm in inland central FL.)  We usually don't get quite so hot but during certain seasons I've found that a system with less than 300 gallons in it can have extreme temperature swings here, fast enough/big enough to kill fish when we go form an odd warm spell to sudden extreme cold freeze nights.  And even during nicer seasons, certain types of system designs tend to cause more severe temperature swings and the best remedy for that is more water volume.

I would recommend some shade cloth to you Dukie, Look up Aluminet.

Just a thought Re: Nitrates

Low Nitrate levels in a mature AP System are not a bad sign. As long as you have some Nitrates indicated in your Nitrate test and your plants are in good health, you only need higher Nitrates if you wish to add plant load.

I've noticed a lot of people have GH for their APSystems. Is this mainly to control environment or water tempatures? It get hot in the summer here in the Valley around 105 F how is that going to affect my FT water temp? It's an outdoor system.

@Dukie Dixon

Perhaps if you want to feed them all of your nitrates.

Can I safely place cat tail plants in my AP system?

Thomas Kelly: That is a tricky question.  Depends on the fish.  I personally would not make it the main diet of the fish.  Some fish like Koi, Goldfish and even Tilapia enjoy the treat, it is not their primary food.  Fish like trout and Salmon enjoy a high protein diet, mixing larvae and insects.  I would be concerned, and this is a mixed discussion of various opinions, on why a compost bin has maggots in it, plus what kind of maggot was is, Black Soldier Fly, House Fly?  BSF really good, house fly...well I would think something is getting put in the bin that should not be there, but that has nothing to do with feeding fish the maggots.

Maggots As Fish Food?

On a TV show a Aquaphonic's Man had a compost vegetable bin in which maggots were breaking the food down. He took handful of maggots to feed the fish. Anyone else do that?

Here is a little tip to help reduce some pests.  In my greenhouse I inserted screens over the vents as well as a screen door to the front door.  If you have a fan, you may be able to add a screen box over the fan, check the manufacturer.

Introduce Ladybugs or other beneficial insects to your greenhouse, before you have a pest problem.

If you buy a home kit greenhouse (DIY) be sure to add a barrier between the ground and the interior of the greenhouse.  In our case we raised the greenhouse on 4x4, built a floor support structure, lined with ground cloth, filled with Decomposed granite ( I get it for $4 a ton) at least 3" deep and packed tightly, and install a floor over it.  I used decking not plywood to allow for drainage.  It helps with heat control as well as keeps insects from getting in via the ground.  Though there is a price for doing it, it has helped after I infested my house with Aphids from cuttings in my AP from my garden.  What a nightmare and it took all winter to fully get rid of them.

Bio-security is important in greenhouse growing but keep in mind that very few greenhouses are going to keep pests out completely so do some research into remedies that you CAN use in aquaponics, since you will need to use some things eventually.  Be careful of anything that includes soaps or oils.  Chemical pesticides are a no-no and generally too dangerous for fish.  Search primarily for biological controls and use sparingly but appropriately according to labels.
