Butch-
I found that using the male and female adapters from the electrical conduit section in our home depot works very well. The problem with PVC male/female adapters is the male has a bevel before the threads and getting these tight is near to impossible. Look for the gray "plastic" units in the electrical dept. they fit my 3/4" - 1' PVC pipes flush to the bottom of the grow beds
Uniseal will be the cheapest option. http://www.aussieglobe.com/uniseal1.htm
Shipping is reasonable especially if you're ordering several seals.
What is the cheapest way to install the bell siphon on the grow bed ? Bulkhead fittings and Uniseals are not in the budget right now. using 3/4" pipes and male and female pvc adapters does not quite work. it won't screw together tight without using a wrench. any suggestions ?
If anyone here is in Maryland, I just created a group Maryland Aquaponics for open discussion about the difficulties specific to our area. Please join me and lets talk aquaponics.
Rob do you out the green sand in the grow beds? What would be a good amount to use in a system of about 500 gallons total water?
Great advice Rob, haven't noticed it mentioned anywhere else. Thanks as always. Any more info on the "Minerals Plus"?
Jim, i believe most good garden centers have green sand. of course i get mine from Brite Ideas Hydro on S. Congress. its good stuff.. has mag and cal and other stuff..
totally safe for ap, and does the job for long time.. i know a guy who only adds green sand once or twice a year and never has iron or mag issues.
but if you look at the minerals plus,, it has higher levels of everything.. so i use both of them now..
im doing some major iron test runs right now.. and will post my findings asap.
but go with the greensand, you wont regret it.
@Jack Dunbar - I have a similar indoor setup. For pollination I have been using an old electric toothbrush. It seems to work OK, and my plants set more veggies, although a fan may work just as well or better. I didn't have much luck growing tomatoes, but I only tried them once. Now that I have a better grow light, it might be fun to try again.
In my NFT setup, the pots are within 1/4" of the bottom of the troughs, just enough for the water to flow under and past them. As long as the rafts are floating in the water, I really don't believe there is much of a minimum height. I have seen rafts floating in 2" of water up to 6", I'm sure that there are those here that will suggest how deep their water is and I'm sure it works well for them.
There is not too much in aquaponics that is written in stone as everyone's situation is different. Test which works best for you and go with it
Can anyone suggest a minimum depth needed for a raft bed?
