Nate, PVC is fine for a system. The nutrients depend primarily on the balance of fish to plants. Cheap is very doable in building aquaponics systems. The more effort you're willing to put into it, the less the cost. The easier you want it, the greater the cost. Once built, it's very inexpensive.

Hello my Name is Nathan and I am trying to develop a system that is both cheap and efficient I have designs drawn up using pvc but I had a friend look at the system and he had told me that the roots are going to be fighting for nutrition. Any thoughts , is this true with aquaponics? any ideas to prevent this from happening but still support the cheap part... bad economy .. jus sayyin'

You want to make sure that you get as much sun as possible through the cool season.  Some shade during the hot season might be a good thing.

The intex pools can be hit and miss for fish.  I know some people who have used them with no problems at all and I know other people who have killed batch after batch of fish with them.  Apparently some pools have chemical treatments mixed right into the vinyl which is designed to leach them into the pool to keep things like algae and bacteria from growing but this is also bad for an aquaponics system and really bad for some fish.  I don't know how to tell which pools will kill fish and which pools won't.

Hi!  I am REALLY new to aquaponics and have lots of questions.  I just received my greenhouse and will be putting it up in the next week or so to start planning the inside.  So... Question #1:  Does my greenhouse have to be in sunlight all day?  Or what is the recommended amount of time it needs to be in full sunlight?   Question #2:  Can I use an old blue Intex pool as my fish tank?

I'd really appreciate any suggestions you all may have. Thanks!

Candice

what type of elastomeric paint/coating is popular to coat plastic totes outdoors to protect them from UV ?

Can be as simple as a mortar tub and an aquarium with a pump and some appropriate media.   Biggest issue with indoors will be lighting.

Hi y'all,

I am new to AP systems, in the thinking stage, in up-state NY.  Had a blast with the gardening thing this summer and want to keep it going.  Thinking something really small to start with.  It needs to be indoors and inexpensive...

Any suggestions???
