I was in contact with a fish hatchery and asked about getting all male tilapia fingerlings. They told me that they don't and can't sex fish because it's difficult to tell what's what until they are five or six inches long. I'm concerned because I also understand that if I have both sexes and they mate that keeps their size down. Is the only way to ensure getting all males is for the hatchery to use hormones?
Bettas don't produce enough waste to grow anything of significance. they may support an indoor plant or two but not enough to support anything like lettuce or greens. Goldfish have been known to live over 50 years. bettas lifespans are about 2-3 years.
I know they've survived my grandchildren so they are hardy but I think goldfish are much cheaper. Makes it a bit easier to bear if you have some floaters.
Hello everyone, since I'm new here I might be asking the same question someone else did already. I keep hearing of using Koi and gold fish as an option, how about betta fish since they live longer than gold fish. Plus don't some stores sell bettas in a vase with plants? Thank everyone for your input.
I wouldn't add more until the ammonia level comes down to below 2 ppm and then I would add a smaller dose so as not to dose over 3-4 ppm.
i started up my system yesterday and added the first dose of ammonia in a 300 gallon system. This a.m. I checked the ammonia level and it's already 4 ppm. Should I add more ammonia or wait to see if the level comes down before adding more.
Only way I know of doing this Michael is via a timer ;-)
God bless,
Syphons rarely synchronize unless you don't want them to. Don't expect the siphons to work at exactly the same rates, just get each siphon working and let them run to their own schedule as long as they all keep working the way you want.
As Richard says, if they are not in sync, it will mean less water level fluctuation.
Its probably better if they don't empty at once Michael. Less water out of your sump and tank ( depending on how you designed it) at once.
I have 3 IBC grow beds and I just launched the system today. Is it important for all three siphons to empty at the same time? I'm having trouble adjusting the water flow so they all empty at once. Otherwise it's working great.
