I'm not breeding my catfish (Channel catfish have to be 3-5 years old before they are even mature enough to start breeding) so I've never had catfish fry in the tanks.

I have catfish and bluegill in together but the catfish are already bigger than most of the bluegill so I'm not too worried about them eating each other since I feed them.

I have heard of people having bluegill breed for them in large aquaponic systems.  I haven't had my bluegill long enough to have experience there myself.

I prefer bluegill because they are more flavorful fish than tilapia but the fact that they are carnivorous is a concern because they will eat the fry of any breeding fish in the tank. Do they eat the fry of your catfish?

I buy Channel Catfish and Bluegill from Florida Fish Farms about once a year.  They don't cost that much at 30-60 cents each depending on size.  And since I'm not heating or using a greenhouse I find the channel catfish grow out faster than the Blue Tilapia I had.  In about 10 months most of my channel catfish are going to be at least 3 lb and if I keep them for a year they are usually all between 3-6 lb and If I keep them 2 years I could have 10 lb catfish.  Biggest Tilapia I managed to grow out in two years was still only 2 lb and most of my Tilapia were about a pound.

Given the recent increased interest in Blue Tilapia's, I am sharing some information that I received from the Florida Division of Aquaculture a couple of years ago. I do not believe that they have identified anyone else as yet as a certified supplier of such.

I had purchased a few from Keith last summer...may not be a bad idea to call him and check availability.

Thank you for contacting the Division of Aquaculture about your plans for a new fish farm.  If you are planning on raising tilapia as a business and selling them, you will need to apply for aquaculture certification.  If you are raising blue tilapia as a hobby or for personal consumption, you do not need to apply for AQ certification.

White Brook Tilapia Farm's Blues are a verified pure strain and were tested by LSU's Aquaculture Research Center for genetic purity.

We used to drop ship Blues for the Aquaponics Source, but are no longer doing so.  I'm not sure who is doing it for them now.

$100/year? Wow, you're right. I'd have a hard time with that, and possibly not being able to discharge water to my soil garden.

Each female is capable of spawning approximately every 21-28 days.  You can remove the fry for growing out separately if you desire.
