I do have some plants in, yes. Mostly herbs and a few small seedlings. I plan to put in more tomorrow. And I stopped adding ammonia several days ago. This is fishless cycling.
Do you have any plants in yet Michael? If no, time to start planting.
Are you dosing daily with ammonia or are you cycling with fish?
If you are fishless, I'll recommend you stop dosing and wait till you see the ammonia and nitrite start coming down a bit before you dose again and you probably can use smaller doses.
Ah. Thank you so much. Clarifies everything. I just have to be patient and wait at least another week or two.
How high should the nitrates get? I'm still cycling my system and while the ammonia and nitrite are STILL not coming down, the nitrates have shot up to 40. I added more water to my fish tank this a.m. and cleaned out some dirt that that had gotten into the system but I'm concerned about the ammonia and nitrite numbers not coming down. Any suggestions?
The reason for water changes is to protect the fish. Since you're fishless, you don't need to change it.
With the ammonia up that high I might just suspect testing the water under different lighting conditions affecting you comparison of the chart to the water unless you have planted any seedlings that came in with a bit much dirt (and maybe fertilizer) that didn't get washed off very well. I've seen a nitrite spike before from planting store bought seedlings with way too much dirt into a small system so why not ammonia.
Hang in there for a few days and see what happens.
It is not uncommon to start getting nitrates long before the nitrite spike passes. The nitrite spike can sometimes last for a while but when it finally comes down it will probably do it fast and watch the pH carefully around that time because it is the first phase when a sudden pH drop could happen.
Unless plumbers 5200 could be adding ammonia. Hope not.
