Thanks, Heidi. Looks very interesting!
It's that "crumble" that AS sells. I plan to check the ammonia levels tomorrow. Thanks.
Michael, what are you feeding the fry? If it is a feed that you can see well enough to know if they are eating it all up, then you can feed as much as they will eat up in 5-10 minutes (keep an eye on water tests to make sure your ammonia and nitrite stay down as you increase the feed, if they start spiking you will have to ease off the feed a little while the bio-filter catches up.)
Oh for my spinach and swiss chard loving friends... have you seen the new flower sprouts yet? Johnny Select Seeds has it they are a cross between brussel sprouts and kale - they look awesome! Unfortunately they are also on backorder until May - here is a link if interested it is going to be one of my special interest plants for the summer!
Any guidelines for feeding fry? I got mine yesterday and put food in today and they ate it rather eagerly. So how much should I give to 50 fry? I plan to feed twice a day.
I'd wait until they have something to eat. Solids, algae, plant root remains, etc. We added ours after the system was relatively mature.
At what point should I add the red worms? I get my fish tomorrow.
Ah, I wish I liked Swiss Chard.
add swiss chard to the list of things you can cook and use like spinach (texture and flavor of swiss chard is also probably a bit closer to spinach than turnip.)
I have also managed to keep swiss chard growing in aquaponics into summer while my spinach wet to seed last year as soon as it got warm in spring.
Yes, it does! We grow turnips & beets, and cook those greens just like spinach, so we only need a few spinach plants & It saves on grow space. Also, I don't know what others do, but w/spinach & lettuce I trim the outer leaves for meals & leave the plant to replenish itself so I don't need to grow new too often. More space saved. :)
