Home Depot always has bagged pea gravel.
Thank you ! I started planting and quickly realized I need more pea gravel. I combined what I had to bring my small beds up. Water is flowing nicely. Now I want more beds...
Thank you
I've run constant flood media beds that never drained and yes you do need to make sure there is enough flow through them that they don't become stagnant but it is also important to make sure the top of the media isn't constantly wet (unless you are growing pond plants like water cress) or many plants will struggle with rot problems at their crowns/stems.
TC isn't it more about insuring the grow bed has good drainage - circulation - and no standing water in it that would drown the roots?
Amanda, just make sure that the top of the gravel is dry in your plant beds. If you don't have enough gravel in them, then get some river rock or lava rock to top up the beds so the plant stems will stay dry, otherwise your plants might have issues with crown and stem rot.
I'm with John, just go for it. Or go to a nearby fresh water lake, get 5 gallons of water out of it and pour it in the tank. The water has plenty of bacteria to get the growing going. I used my own pond water for my grow tanks, worked great.
Phil- we have been pumping water for about a week getting a feel for it.
I just located a test kit but the chart is water stained so I will have to find a new.
John- you are right .I just need to do it!
After reading many posts this morning....
I am learning. Bonus : I need more grow beds
Amanda, you're in the right place. Sounds like you may be ready, so just go for it. If you have a question or if you are looking for suggestions, this is the "start here" section, one of several actually.
Go ahead and start jumping to check for leaks. Post some pics here if you like and do a little research. Better yet, have your son do some research.
How long have you been pumping water through the grow tanks?
