Normally I love getting new visits but today I was just leaving the fish barn when suddenly I was startled by a guest. Actually I was a bit more than startled. A 3 foot long rat snake slithered through the door way as I was going out.

Perhaps I'm not as eco-friendly as I should be, but either him or me had to go!

Because I spent so much time building the place I felt it should be him. I tried to run him off but he wanted in. So after a few seconds of foot stomping, yelling and rock throwing it was apparent he was intent on staying. I eventually had to put the beast down sadly.

If Mother Nature hadn't decided I should have an opposing thumb I would not have been able to grab the bush axe, so blame her.

Is there a better way to keep snakes out of an area besides sulfur?  I covered the yard  with the stuff and still have snakes coming  around. I know the rat snake would not hurt me but it would cause me to hurt myself. I'm getting old and the heart can't take many scares like that.

I prefer the snakes to the rats.  I actually managed to get really happily excited a couple winters ago when I saw a huge rat snake because we were having a horrible rat problem during a long cold winter for here, they liked the protection of the greenhouse.

When you get rats eating old food in your barn you're gonna be sorry. Next time shew him out with a broom.
