How my garden grows a year later

Still going. A Jacuzzi about 300 gallons supports about 75 Tilapia, three type, I think. It also has 3 channel Catfish about 12" long and 3 Chinese Catfish about 8 to 10" long. The Tilapia, especially the white ones are at least 10" and while I do nothing to bred or separate them, they must keep the population in check. There are always juveniles present. Maybe some grow and others don't.

The Tilapia same age and from the same source in an 80 gallon and a 40 gallon eat plenty, but stay… Continue

Hawaii Library Patrons interested in Aquaponic Gardening

Picking up books at the library for my soon to be visiting grandkids. While there, I thought I would look up books on aquaponics. I discovered aquaponics didn't search well and came up with no listings. When I did find it after searching hydroponics, I found out it was Sylvia Bernstein's Aquaponic Gardening that was listed in 26 Hawaii libraries.

As of today 12-12-12, 18 were checked out or in transit to another library, 7 were in and 1 missing at a big isle library.

I was just…

Women in business, aquaponics and Mitt Romney

Without getting into the politics of it all, I was reading about Mitt Romney's pledge in Ohio to help female entrepreneurs and innovators in creating small businesses and the jobs that go with them.

This had me reflecting on the aquaponics field and just how prominate women are in designing, building, teaching and running aquaponics systems.

Of the 7000+ members on the Aquaponics Community Gardening Forum, many are women and many are leaders in aquaponics.

One friend of…

Aquaponics bug keeps spreading

About 8 months ago I started to realize that maybe other's felt like I did. I got on the forums, especially the Aquaponics Gardening Community and it was much more apparent that many others were afflicted. When I got Sylvia's book, I felt better knowing that I was under it's control, the aquaponics bug has taken hold of a pretty large chunk of population.

Saturday I was at a community rummage sale and ran into some old high school classmates. Having talked to them a few times over the last… Continue

The Aquaponics State of Health

Is it gluten intolerance or gluten overload that is the problem?

Like so many things that are "bad" for us, it seems they have become bad primarily since they have evolved into highly processed versions that are present in almost everything we consume. Maintaining a healthy body through supporting the natural biology present within and on our bodies is the key. Like our soils and the water/media of aquaponics systems.

Living beings are merely a reflection of the state of health…

Kauai Community College Aquaponics Program

Kauai Community College has an 8 week aquaponics course that starts in August 2012. They have a pretty good program for those lucky enough to be there. A reason to go to Hawaii, as if there weren't enough of them.

A clear path of aquaponics knowledge

I belong to about a half dozen forums on aquaponics. I am new, only a year into aquaponics, but have spent a lot of time researching and communicating with people more knowledgeable than I am.

It seems despite all the info that could allow most people, me included to go straight to doing aquaponics the right way, there is an inherent human quality that seems to want to do it from scratch and to find new ways.

I was just reading one of many posts from "newbie aquapons" that are asking… Continue

Jacuzzi MauiPonics

Moved my Channel Catfish and the rest of the white tilapia to my jacuzzi aquaponics system to join more tilapia and some Chinese Catfish. They all seem to have their favorite hangouts in the deep and among the potted taro plants.
