On the side of my house is a sustainable living laboratory. I'm the current director of research and development. So far there have been no major innovations just a repeat of tried and true methods of aquaponic gardening found on here.

I have been Square foot gardening for a couple years and also vermicomposting. I started raising rabbits to help formulate a consistent input into my worm bins. And I got a Bio-pod for Christmas and haven't quite figured out how to keep the BSF fed because we dont waste food such as meat plus we have a few dogs. I have put a few dead fish in there and BSF Larvae devour as advertised.

My main interest is in Community Planning (New Urbanism, Smart Growth). I have studied inside a vaccuum for too long and need to get out in the community and be a part of the process. The plan is to attend UH MURP upon completion of the HPU MAGLSD program. My current focus is on promoting household food production systems.

Is there a need for academic research on aquaponics? I think so.

Are you documenting your research? I know much of the information about aquaponic gardening can be found after an extensive online search of the open sources about aquaponics. Some of the information out there is however incorrect. This forum is a great resource for many to weed through the information and to see what other people are doing.

Sylvia's book on this subject is a great way to have all the current information out there in one place and saves loads of time in trying to…

Aquaponics Design phase begin.

Hello all,

I'm relieved to find an online community to bounce some ideas off of. I have been thinking about aquaponics since I discovered it a year ago on a PBS special. I took notes and started searching for simple design parameters. Such as how many fish will one person eat in a year. I know there is an answer out there but really its subjective to the person. I eat fish maybe every other week so thats maybe 23lbs of fish I'd eat in a year. Anyway, I went out to Olomana Gardens in…

Thank you so very much for your interest and support. Ebenezer Howard and Bill Mollison are definitely in my heroes list as are the rest of the pioneers in sustainable and or intensive agriculture/living.

I post this not to brag but hopefully to let other permaculturalist here, advise me on what I might be lacking. I know sometimes when one is too close, one simply overlooks some very basic and important stuff.

Using what I have, I zoned this the best I could for a rough draft, according to the principles of permaculture. Of course it would be more ideal if I could start with raw land but this is the opportunity I have to work with so, can only do the best I can.

Thank you again for your support.

Cheers

Welcome Philip,

Thanks for joining the Aquaponic Gardening community!  I hope you find it a fun place to explore aquaponics.  There is a real blend of experienced and new aquapons in this community, so please don’t hesitate to get in there and start asking questions.  Everyone is quite happy to help out new members – no question is too basic.

A great place to start is to read the “How to Use This Site” link on the upper right corner, “Start Here” section of the Home page.  You might also find the “Aquaponic Gardening Rules of Thumb” guidelines helpful.

Please participate and check in with us every day!  We are constantly posting news about aquaponics and the good food movement.

Thanks again for joining us, and I look forward to getting to know you.

Sylvia
