In the interest of developing food for all these fishes, am wondering if any work has been done to investigate the use of Moringa, a plant (tree) with higher vitamin and nutrient content than most any other on earth - could it be a supplemental food source for omnivores such as tilapia. A world map of where the Moringa grows matches, almost exactly, the area we know as the 'developing world', and is (there) being developed as a food source for people and livestock. Here is a very comprehensive…

Hahaha, yes heating is definately an issue. We are looking into solar water heating to provide radiant heat for the grow house. We are also looking into off-grid ways of generating power as well. We have a desire to to be totally self sustainable eco friendly and organic.
Hi Eric,
Were you doing aquaponics when you lived in BC? If so, what did you use for fish, and where did you get them.
Your pictures of your new set up looks awesome. Our little grow house is just is a setup model. If it all goes as good as we expect it will, my brother has 3 acres of gently sloping land. We envision several large grow houses on a tiered system. Gravity feed down from our huge fish ponds at the top. A large pump at the bottom to return water to the fish tank.
Thanks for taking the interest in searching out similar "work" of mine. I am familiar with Will Allen and Growing Power. We inherently address similar issues and have started with similar motivations. I will be researching the viability of an urban microfarm in Baltimore, with Johns Hopkins, using available vertical, rooftop, and aquaculture growing methods. The idea is to build a scalable, profitable business for the locals to eventually take over. I have a personal stake in the work too. I want to live and learn about the sustainable systems in order to repeat it somewhere else of my choice. Who wouldn't?! I want to live sustainably while I help others understand how its possible also. :) Do you still need clarification of my effort? It will be
"Disadvantaged communities" is a term used by many social activists for the poor and low income people, usually minorities in urban settings. In my research focus, a low-moderate income community in Baltimore is my focus for a few reasons. 1) The NEED for quality food. 2) The potential of community involvement 3) The NEED for a local business with small-moderate profit and 4) The proof that, if it can work here, it could work anywhere (nationally or abroad) to serve. It seems like you are working internationally. I think we should talk, esp. about your interest in Moringa. I used it in Uganda to improve our water purification method. Would that be helpful to know?
Thanks for joining the Aquaponic Gardening community! I hope you find it a fun place to explore aquaponics. There is a real blend of experienced and new aquapons in this community, so please don’t hesitate to get in there and start asking questions. Everyone is quite happy to help out new members – no question is too basic.
