Buying a House!

Posted on January 20, 2012 at 11:57am 4 Comments

I am very excited to say that Molly, the fish, the cats and I are all moving to a bigger space (with a full basement and half an acre)!  This is exciting news for the tilapia, who are now 6 months old and are threatening to breed.

This means that I get to plan new systems for the new house!  Livestock wise, I want to do perch outdoors on the screen porch (in Michigan), and tilapia and red claw crayfish indoors.  The tilapia will need to be tackled first.

I am…

Work and First Tilapia

Posted on August 18, 2011 at 2:34pm 2 Comments

So, here we are, in mid-August and I haven't posted a thing!  There hasn't been much to say since the AP project got put on hold due to work and family demands. I've decided I need to make some changes in my personal life... primarily in my line of work.

I put myself through college (B.S. Geography) working as an engineering technician; it was good work experience and I wouldn't trade that for anything, but I graduated in May and am now working in an asphalt lab... gross. I need to go…

K.I.S.S. Redesign

Posted on June 4, 2011 at 2:54pm 3 Comments

Decided my initial design was too complicated and sprawling for a first go.  I've decided to just use the IBC and do flood/drain with a bell siphon.  I'm eliminating 1/3 of my GB space so will have to stock a little lighter and/or do water changes, but I am okay with this compromise and will a have a little wiggle room in the apartment for alterations/additions. I'm busy at work and will be for several months - I'm hoping this redesign means I'll actually be able to get the system up and…

Work Has Begun on First System, Plumbing Still in Question.

Posted on May 29, 2011 at 3:30pm 7 Comments

I've been hatching plans for my first aquaponic system over the past several weeks.  I am new to aquaponics, and very excited, as is my girlfriend, Molly! (she may turn up here from time to time).  We might be a little... overzealous: We have already covertly reinforced the living room floor in our not-quite-700-sq.ft. complex-apartment. We are officially invested!

We are currently fortunate enough to have my dad's backyard and garage to work in and are accumulating…

Hi Ellen. I'm at Covenant Christian High School between Grandville and Standale. Now the big task of designing a system for the greenhouse. I want to have as many seperate "pods" as possible to accomodate multiple research teams for my Advanced Biology class. This summer I hope to research this and expect this forum will be my primary source of info. Stop by some time and I'll show you a smaller system in my classroom that might be good for your apartment.

Welcome Ellen,

Thanks for joining the Aquaponic Gardening community!  I hope you find it a fun place to explore aquaponics.  There is a real blend of experienced and new aquapons in this community, so please don’t hesitate to get in there and start asking questions.  Everyone is quite happy to help out new members – no question is too basic.

A great place to start is to read the “How to Use This Site” link on the upper right corner, “Start Here” section of the Main page.  You might also find the “Aquaponic Gardening Rules of Thumb” guidelines helpful.

Please participate and check in with us every day!  We are constantly posting news about aquaponics and the good food movement.

Thanks again for joining us, and I look forward to getting to know you.
