Aquaponic Gardening

A Community and Forum For Aquaponic Gardeners

You Know You’re Addicted to Aquaponic Gardening When...

  • Your fish recognize you
  • You buy a special home for the BSF maggots you are growing to feed your fish.
  • You are known throughout the neighborhood as the house that grows the fish.
  • You know the temperature of your fish tank every day.
  • You talk about bacteria aging like it was a fine wine
  • You banish your car to the driveway so you can have more room to grow in the garage
  • You stress out over a .1 move in pH or ammonia.
  • You buy a bigger truck so that you can haul more gravel.
  • Your non-gardening spouse becomes conversant in aquaponic terms
  • You look forward to a Saturday afternoon spent at the dump looking for old bathtubs and barrels
  • You plan vacation trips around visiting other aquaponic gardeners.
  • You travel 150 miles to pick up 20 tilapia
  • When considering your budget, plants and fish are more important than groceries
  • You could swear your fish are on the verge of speaking to you
  • The terms "bacteria", "poop" and "waste" have taken on entirely new meanings
  • You’d rather go to an aquarium store to shop than a clothes store.
  • You take every single person who enters your house on a “garden tour”
  • You look at cattle trough and think "grow bed"
  • You ask for tools for Christmas, Mother/Father’s day, your Birthday and any other occasion you can think of.
  • Invasive pond life like algae and duckweed are now fish food.
  • You know how many bags of Hydroton your car will hold.
  • Your preferred reading matter is forum threads

And last but not least:

You know that the four seasons are:
Planning your System
Cycling your System
Maturing your System
~and~
Expanding your System

When you are sitting in a waiting room, about to go into the most important job interview of your career, and you look at the chemical make up of a bottle of mineral water and think...............................pH a bit low, sodium and chloride a bit high and we will definately have to buffer that alkalinity................

You stare at little things all the time.  Checking if the sand in your grow bed is compacting.  Looking at the day's growth in your seedlings.  Trying to see if the seeds in your sand bed is germinating.  Trying to find the route that those darn ants are following onto your NFT.  It must look really odd to observe this from a distance........

Also - when you find yourself in a hardware / plastics / irrigation shop and you are trying to explain to the salesperson what you REALLY intend doing with the thing in your hands.

Every time you pass an abandon building or parking lot you imagine a garden.

There is no cure ,no matter how many steps you take, hopefully for our world  its contagious

until the children happily eat their veggies.  (actually letting them graze-the children that is-might not help though.)

I actually think the world is a better place with addicts like us...although our spouses might not agree with that!

So Sylvia are you going to write the 12 step program on how to stop.  Who is willing to contribute to this book?.

My wife became addicted the day our daughter ate her first vegetable directly out of the system.

Our fish do recognize me, why just yesterday Fred was thanking me for

adding a solar panel so he could have aeration all night and Steve, well he's a real card...do you know he was playing dead the other day...?

Admitting the addiction is the first step to getting your wife addicted to it also

My wife just told me that admitting that I have a problem is the first step to recovery.....But I don't want to be cured!!

I don't know, Kobus...you've got some mighty tough competition for that prize in here!

OK, so I'm heading out to a new media bed, after work, in the dark, with my torch and waterproof phone to use as stopwatch to see if the flooding cycle has improved with the extra inch of sand I added.  This morning I was standing near my research system when I thought it just did not sound right and rushed in expecting to find a blocked pipe or something overflowing.......Do I win a prize?

Every time you see a new plant, you are constantly thinking "How can I grow this in my Aquaponics system"

You start to day dream at odd times "how this will work" or 'how I can improve this', being totally oblivious to the world around you...only to be woken up by a jab to your body with someone asking ...'so what do you think?"...eh! about what?

When you have just completed your first system and you cant wait to start the next one. Its like aquaholism.
Comment by RW on May 12, 2011 at 9:00pm
...you take beer out of your fridge to make room for fish food.

Very funny and so true indeed.

In my case: When walking through the city...i imagine the trajectory of the sun to find THE perfect sunny side of any building...
