Hi folks, I hope this holiday season is treating you all right. I am teaching a round of aquaponic classes at my place in Santa Cruz this week, Thurday thru Sunday, and solar/wind, worms/BSFL, and wood gasification next week. Check www.fishnetaquaponics.com for details. Thanks

Just got my new tank delivered.  $ 219.00 to the door. It a Rubbermaid.... I have a Rubbermaid trailer  for 10 years and I haven't been able to break it yet.  lol

So will get a blog going of the new aquaponics garden going in.

Hi all, right now Ace hardware has their outdoor mechanical timer on sale for $8. these are generally way better quality than anything you'll find through a local aquarium supply. They usually run $15 - $17.

Thank you Alan.  Feed stores like Tractor Supply are often a good place to shop for stock tanks.

Here is anb8'x2' tank for $350  and here is something similar to your 300 gallon Rubbermaid Tank

Haha. Week and and destroy? Should have read "seek and destroy"

I'm also experimenting with cherry red shrimp for the same purpose of eating detritus, and super stoked with something new, a blend of micro-organisms that eat solids, similar to the blend used to clean septic tanks, and even taken internally as "pro-biotics". Come to my class on Sunday Dec 2nd, and get all the scoop, plus hands-on training of making a worm-tea brewer, an ebb and flow system using only air with large 3/4"+ pipe sizes, no bell-siphon, no timers, and no moving parts.

Fishy, I have bought scuds through them, and they were good to deal with. I was surprised how few come in their biggest package, but it should be plenty to start a colony. My advice, designate a tank of its own to cultivate them. I added them to three different systems and none took hold. I have a few, I think, holding on in one of my systems, but escaped tilapia fry are pretty effective at week and destroy. Scuds are sensitive to ammonia, so add them only to well-cycled tanks, and keep you calcium levels high. Good luck.

Ha! Here is a local source for gammarus (scuds) for those who don't have the time to go hunting for them. Haven't had time to call them yet. I'll report back after the holiday.
