I went to Chino Valley this last weekend to visit my mother and visited a tilapia aquaponics farm called tilapiaaquaponics.com. Jerry and Don are the men behind this thriving operation. They have a 1000 gallon tank filled with ready to eat sized tilapia along with another tote filled with fingerlings that drive their small growbed layout. They have been doing this for about two years and love to help anyone they can. These guys seem to be innovative in that they are building low cost but effective solar air and water heater.
The guy from tank and barrel, his name is Phil Grant and I believe he will give you a price break or free delivery if you mention my name.
I like the rubbermaid tanks from Ace for fish tanks and building my own grow beds.
I have learned a lot about how to make grow beds, from my mistakes. but for $150, I might just try an IBC.
My last summer's setup is my picture. it was shadded from the evening sun. I did not use a cooler. my water never went above 95f. Tilapia are African fish. they can take the heat. now this time of year, I use aquarium heaters a bunch of 400 watt. my tanks never go below 77f. Tilapia get stressed at about 55f.
I have 15 fish in one tank outside. two tanks (600 gal &150 gal) are in my greenhouse. each tank has its own grow-bed.
no right way.. no wrong way.. take care of the fish and the fish will take care of you.
Dr. George Brooks has bred the freshwater shrimp. He's going to give us some when we're ready; we were going to grow them in one of our tanks. But they take a lot more water than fish, and I think they like deep water. Let us know what you find out.
Thank you.
ebay looked good. also I have been thinking about having fresh water shrimp under the duckweed. A friend of mine is researching freshwater shrimp under his lettuce at UA. I will need to change the depth of my duckweed to about 4 inches. Just thinking out-loud.
GardenPool has it on occasion.
Google search:
Duckweed at the Phx zoo: http://www.fractalnature.com/duckweed.html Hmmm. They have a lot...Maybe during Zoolights...
You can buy it from a place in Oro Valley: http://www.azgardens.com/p-351-duckweed-lemna-minor-1-lb-bag.aspx A pound is a lot!
I've heard it can be found at either some hydroponics stores (I don't think HomeGrown has any at their stores) or pond supply stores.
eBay sounds like a good option
I used to buy and sell on eBay. Thank you
