Dave, Have you determined if you have Giant australian redclaws or just red crayfish?  I have experience and interest in the Australian redcaw.

Kent and Maynhia,

I am more inclined to think the the ammonia and nitrites need to be converted prior to soaking the roots into the water. I would think to add a raft system after the bio- mechanism has had time to work. then maybe add an aerator to the raft system.. this is just me thinking out loud.

Mark, Does the test kit you are looking at read low range Ph below 6 or just high range?

Mark,

We found the test kit online for about 1/2 the normal Petsmart/petco price. Then we took the ad into Petsmart and they matched it. Not all managers will, so you might have to go to a store or three to get one that will.

Maynhia, I think that for most home systems there is not enough solid waste to really be a big concern, unless you plan to maintain a lot of fish.

You could go either way but I prefer to have a constant flow of water in my rafts which means they needs to be the first stop for me. How many fish you have will determine if a pre filter to remove solids prior to the rafts is necessary. The one advantage to putting the ebb&flow first is you could use a simple kitchen scrubby to filter most of the solids as long as you rince it regularly.

I was considering ordering API freshwater test kits online. To make it viable, I need to order multiple kits. Would anyone commit to $25 flat amount for the kit? Once I have 5, I will place an order.

Kent you said to run the water thru the raft first then the ebb can you explain? ...

ok now that I think about it i think your way might be a better solution... because I don't want the water filtered before it reaches my raft system. 

Boy I'm so glad I can get suggestions from this group! I could of have set up my system incorrectly.

Maynhia, did you see Kent's posting? It looks like you have two good sources for information.
Lava rock varies by the size of the air holes. the air holes help to give bacterial space to grow and to hold water, but If the holes are too big, plant roots can grow through them & that can be a pain for maintenance. BBQ rock might be a bit large in size and a bit rough for grow media, but they might be fine for a separate bio filter. It's hard to say without seeing them. Also, you want to watch for any chemicals the rocks have been exposed to. You don't want to introduce anything that could harm fish or plants.
