The number of fish depend on your plants, grow-bed area, and fish tank size.

I would start small and keep it simple. There are many sources for fish. so you can add more as you grow or feel success. I hope this helps

I found some fish for sale, the only downside is its in Chino Valley. I trust this source so its got to be. I need some 3 to 4" tilapia, how many would be safe in a 55 gallon aquarium? Do you think it would be better if I get more fingerlings instead?

Welcome, Jeff!

Brian, I just read your post that it's a 275 tote. That'll be perfect, but remember it's not just the water volume to growbed, it's the amount of fish waste, so the quantity & size of the fish are as, if not more, important than the water volume. It will be fun to watch your system grow!

As for heat, I would love to be one of Dave's fish. Our fish aren't so lucky. We have two heaters in our above-ground tank & one in our in-ground tank. The heaters are between 150 and 200w. Both are maintained at 70 degrees. Tilapia will be more active & grow faster at 80+, but this serves our purpose & food needs.

Our breeders are indoors, and kept between 80 & 85 degrees in a 75 gal tank with one heater. Pictures of our breeders are on my home page.

Mark, it looks like we'll have some available in about a month. I'll announce when they're ready.

We built our 14x14 greenhouse from PVC and plastic. We have about the same gallons as Dave Story, but not enough beds. We're going to scale back to 350 gal and increase the growbeds.

125 gal might be shy, but a 200 or 300 gal tote would handle that amount of growbed if the fish are large. enough. It depends on the type, number and size of the fish.

Hello to everyone in AZ! I live in Buckeye and my wife and I are looking forward to getting a system going as soon as we are in our new house. Hope to learn and share as we go along on this new adventure! Take care, Jeff Davidson

Last summer,  my tanks got up as high as 95, which is okay for tilapia. This summer, I may use chillers.

How do you keep them cool?

Comment by Dave & Yvonne Story on January 15, 2012 at 4:58pm

temperature:

I use 400 watt aquarium heaters. I do most of my aquarium supplies from Amazon.

I use at least one heater per 100 gallons of water. I have three fish tanks in  my greenhouse the 300 gallon tanks has 3 heaters. in my 150 gallon thank I keep 2 heaters. In my 100 gallon tank I keep 2 heaters (my main tank for breeding).I,  have a 100 gallon tank outside of the greenhouse (insulated) it has 2 heaters. I have another breeding tank in the house 40 gallon with one heater 1 male and 1 female. He just started building a nest.

I error on the side of caution.
