This spring and summer I was hoping for tilapia breeding in my system. It didn't happen. I tried to make some nest areas, a few of the big boys got all agressive, but no dice.

Not sure why they didn't multiply, so I'll have to resort to buying fingerlings again.

Ah well.

On a different note, the system water temperature is starting to fall significantly with the 'cooler' weather. Looks like I'll have to refurbish the solar water heater and get it going again.

There is a forum for breeding on this site...

Are you planning to breed for replacement? If so, they will breed by themselves in summer when the water is warm enough. You'll have to make the decision to either kill some fish in spring so there will be room for babies to grow out or setup another set of tanks to separate the fish because they need more space to get amorous and have enough space for babies to survive.

Otherwise, you'll have to make capital investments to create the required environment for forced breeding.

I have about 500 gallons breeding of tanks in the house with 50 brood females at work now. It keeps me very busy between taking care of the brood system and meeting with customers, harvesting eggs and nursing them to fry and fingerling tanks not mention growing worms and eating veggies, it's a full time job at this point.

Nice job on the duck weed BTW The fish must be doing well too!

Does anyone have a good primer for learning materials for a beginner? I want to start gathering the stuff needed to create that perfect environment for them to do their little love thang.

Comment by Dr. George B. Brooks, Jr. on September 19, 2013 at 8:35am: Well the Bok Choi is doing great however the lettuce I planted is getting beat up pretty bad by the heat as is the red chard. So for this week I shall focus on more heat tolerant greens. Plenty of space left for lettuce and more space later after rotating harvests. Things grew pretty quickly.

This weeks planting:

Tokyo Bekana (Did GREAT last year!)

Red Giant Mustard (New for me)

Hon Tsai Tai (Did GREAT last year also)

Mizuna Purple Mustard (New for me)

Komatsuna Summerfest (New for me)
