I added one as well.  Self-sufficiency education.   Hopefully this can add to the cause!

OK - I've done my bit and had a go.

Here's my suggestion.

Encourage, not restrict, Urban Farming and Aquaponics

Log on, second the idea, or write your own.

An excellent comment John!  As did the other two comments just say what you want to see! Chickens, fish, urban farms, whatever. Don't worry about the details such as "what type of zoning is necessary for people to have chickens in their back yard?" That is for staff and politicians to figure out in response to your requests.

Alternatively, go the plan Phoenix and look at what others have written regarding urban ag. If you like what they have to say, SECOND their comment. The second lets us know that people support this idea.

@ Dr George

I, for one, see the value in impacting the city with regards to urban farming and aquaponics, but don't have any idea as to what to write, who it's targeted at, what the content should be, what regulations/laws/restrictions should be amended, etc, etc, etc.

For those that regularly deal with local government and regulations this probably seems obvious, but I really don't know what we should be recommending/suggesting.   i.e. What is the problem we are trying to solve?

I suspect that there's lots of others on this forum who would write a short paragraph or two, if they just knew what they were trying to accomplish.

P.S. In reference to my post below, for those of you who have not seen it, the following is a link to a video of the mayor of Tucson declaring aquaponics day in the city. Regrettably you have to have a facebook account to see it. My apologies, not my video.

Just an FYI. Along with what Sheri said, there is an additional door open to you.  For your consideration here is a copy of the Tucson General plan. Every 10 years all Arizona cities must revise these documents. The general plan is the dream for a city. Zoning and regulations follow the general plan. Development follows zoning. If you want your city to have urban ag, if you can get it in the general plan, much of your battle is done. In this Tucson recognizes urban ag as being of benefit to the city. The residents told them, the city accepted it and the plan was written. Step one COMPLETE. (http://cms3.tucsonaz.gov/plantucson).

Phoenix is still in the process of writing its plan and it will be voted on by residents in 2015. If you want urban agriculture to be recognized and how, you must tell us. My voice though large in this process is not enough. The document must reflect the voice of the people. So here is the link to let your voice be heard.

So far and much to my dismay, Aquaponics has not been mentioned. I look forward to seeing your comments and RECOMMENDATIONS added to the cities mix. The door is open.

Whoops...my last post assumes you're on Facebook.

Mark your calendars for this Saturday, October 19th at 7:00. It will be at the Shoppers in Chandler on Queen Creek Rd and Alma School Rd. Senator Farnsworth will be there to lead us through how to address these issues in the political realm. The focus will be to unite and put pressure on each city as a group from all over the state.
