@ Stephanie, i'm curious to see if plants are worse off or better off in the winter in AP verses dirt. i shut the pump off at night, so if it reaches freezing the water could freeze. if i keep it running it could get too cold for the fish. i got frost cloth at Ace 6 ft x 50 ft for $28. Home Depot on Baseline and in Ahwatukee r sold out of 10 x 20 plankets and burlap. at a minimum, covering the plants with sheets?!
@ Scott, i could see how it would make it more difficult to turn the pile in AP compost. having said that, did your attempt work at all?
My wife and partner Angela now tells me we have grown enough aquaponic greens to last till March 2014. Cool!
@Stephani get a white frost cloth from Home Depot. I think mine came as 12 X 12
so who's ready for the 30 degree weather in the next couple of days.
I have some tomato plants with green fruit on them. Do you guys think I should pull them out or harvest the fruit leave the plant or gamble with the weather and leave the whole thing in the system? My system isn't heated so i don't have any nice micro climates to mitigate the cold.
I need one of those cats...
@Scott Bloom
I have had no personal experience with compost heating; however, when I was a kid, I remember our neighbor getting about a cubic yard of manure which was just dumped beside his house. Nature started the combustion and it seemed like it would never stop smoking.
