@Bob, glad to har they're happier today!  with my tote system, yes, two 300 w heaters has seemed to be plenty.  i had one during the rainy time a week or so ago and it kept it in the 50s.  i shut them off for the day.  I forgot to mention: petsmart will pricematch amazon so if u have internet access on your phone and can show them u'll get a hefty discount likely.  I got the aqueon.

my water is 62.4 right now.  i unplugged the heat lamp just now and unplugged the heaters a few hrs ago.  it's sunny today so i'm gonna save on the electric bill and see how it's going after the gardenpool event today-will prob plug them both in again later.

@John I was right at about 50. Went out this morning, there was one dead. 

@Kim I changed out a ton of water and added hot water throughout the day yesterday. Seemed to work as they were all moving around upright last night. I have to repeat today. Do the two 300w heaters do enough to keep the water above 50? I may go buy a heater today to help these guys out through the night.

Bob, sinc i don't have the styrophome on my tank and sump yet, this is what i do besides the solar heater:  2 300 watt heaters-overkill maybe for my tote tank but i wanted 2 incase one breaks i'll have a back-up.  i also have a heat lamp signing on the tank.  it is clipped onto the sump with a clamp (clamp light with a heat lamp bulb) and i have blankets, a planket, tarp over the tank.  i couldn't get the 3 fish out of the sump so figured i might lose them but i also add boiling water to their tank.  they've all been fine.  i forget the size of your tank, but some boiling water will probably be the fastest thing u can do.  according to sylvia's book, a rapid change in temp could cause fish to die but i don't think a few pots of boiling water will make all that difference to kill a fish, but enough to raise it to keep them warm.  i didn't take stats on this but poured about 4 pots of boiling water in last night and will pour some more tonight.  water in the tank is 64.2 right now, more than i need but i'm working tonight and don't have time to worry about the fish. i'll turn the clamp light on later but left the 2 heaters running all day today cuz i knew this would b a rough week.  it'll cost me $2/day or so for each day i do that so it could add up but it's just for the coldest of nights and weeks.  if i were in your boat, i'd pour boiling water in at a minimum.  i figure i have to top the water off, anyway, may as well be hot water.    hope it works out for u!

Sorry to hear about the sad fish.  Do you know what temperature the fish tank water dropped to.

Mine got down to 50.1F and the fish don't look pleased, but they're not struggling either.

It got down to 14 last night here in prescott.  My Tomatoes didn't do so well in the

cheap green house ( oxymoron, I know)  It looks like I was about 2 weeks to late for my big greenhouse to be completed before we lost anything.  Even though the little greenhouse didn't hold up to that temperature, the big one was still warm without any water mass or heaters... I cant wait to get it going...

Argh! My fish are not doing so well. I'm off to try to slowly bring the temperature up. I have a bunch that are upside down on the bottom, fins still slightly moving. Hoping I can save them or we're having fish tacos. Solar heater didn't work as well as I hoped with the frost last night.

Hello @Kim! We are freezing at the moment. We are making salsa also but I am eating it faster than we can grow the components. (Angie makes great salsa!) We will can later.

i've heard and tried incandescents in soil gardening.  seemed to help. I'd still use frost cloth with the Christmas lights if able, though.

anyone know how much heat a grow light puts out?  they're pretty fragile, but if u could get heat and light for growing, might be worth considering!  maybe a couple grow lights underneath frost cloth?

I have plenty of frost cloth from last year and i always make sure to buy a package as soon as i see them put it out. I had to do the drive all over thing last year to find some at the last minute.

One thing I did hear is that some people use incandescent christmas lights around their plants underneath the shade cloth to put off a little heat. I traded out all my incadescent light for led's last year so haven't been able to try that.
