The seeds i put in sprout but i swear they haven't grown at all in three weeks, they're so tiny. Or it could be just a problem of perception, everything i start indoors gets tall pretty fast, but the ones i start outside seem to slow down in the cold.
I take the easy way out and just toss seeds in my grow bed. They seems to sprout right up and trust me I'm not doing anything special. I use a few more seeds but they're cheap.
The idea of covering my backyard in greenhouse plastic just gets more and more tempting, all of my seedlings outside just seen to stay the same size forever.
Evening Jeff. Hard to tell really. Planted as seedlings from Baker's Nursery, they struggled along in the open for a couple of months then kinda "blew up" after the greenhouse went up a few weeks ago. So for now, lets say 3 months.
Dr. George, you sure know how to hurt someone's feelings with that pic LOL. How long does it take to grow 'em that big?
Hi Kim. What Bob Campbell said. Experiment.
@ Bob
I have agree with your in-ground cost considerations. My concern is that steady long term erosion under the liner would make the grow beds slowly come out of the ground. In your neighborhood I would think redwood would be a good long term solution to line the sides of the hole before laying the pond liner.
I have been thinking along these lines as well since am planning to build a long (70' x 3') single trough GB around the perimeter of my back yard. Because of ergonomics I am planning to build a short block wall to line with a continuous sheet of pond liner and use the ornamental pond as a sump for the system.
I checked out your link below and followed those links as well. Do you show in greater detail how you set up your air lift system? Also, the small impeller pump you show is the same 200 gph unit they sell at harbor fright for about half the money, which is good info to pass along here. I am using them in the breeding aquariums system in house and they are pretty darn bullet proof for $10 bucks (on sale for $6 if you watch)
Kim I get that deviating from what everyone else has done may sound risky, but bang for your buck starts with creating large economical grow beds that will last for years.
I feel Earthan Beds made of pond liner in the soil is about as low cost as you can go. Go to Paul Van der Werf's site to see his results. I personally find his system to make a lot of sense and have had very good results.
I've posted several ideas on my site.
The only reason my Earthan Bed expansion will not be in the ground is because I need to raise the beds to get full sun otherwise shade from a wall will cast a shadow.
I agree with Jacques. Saving money is cool but the big reward for me is the stress relief and feeling of accomplishment that my aquaponics system provides for me. Engineering the projects from home made items is fun and does save money if you have the time.
