all my fish have made it this far, and they have been eating but not as much as they did in the summer time.  They are also getting ninja like - they wont come up and feed until the lid goes down....

My fish are eating again.  Wooo-hooo!  Water temperature is 60-63F and there's fish poo in the water.  The tilapia are swimming a lot faster than they have in weeks.  Super-yay!

I might have made it through another winter with these fish with only a couple of fatalities.

Well, I'm sore and out of shape.

Just wrapped up getting the bases for 2 new growbeds set by clearing channels through my rip rap so that I could get the cement block pads setup (all told there are 16 columns, 8 per bed).

Next step will be get some additional block pads and start work on getting my new beds plumbed (thanks John for the hole saw) ;)

I had hoped to have the beds up by this weekend, but getting the ground prepped and utilizing an old bod took longer than expected

Thanks Dr. Brooks!

I'll put that into practice tomorrow and let you all know how it comes out!

John, thanks for the pics. I've done that before with sunflower seeds without the plastic bags at room temp and it worked great. I tried the same with tomatoes and bell pepper and got no results. Probably didn't keep them moist enough.

Howdy. Regarding @Jim's question regarding what type of paper towel I use. I try to use low cost brands like Fry's "Value" because they are not as strong or absorbent so they fall apart easy and don't get the seeds too wet. I did however have some concerns regarding the chemical content so today I am giving a recycled paper non-bleached bran called "Seventh Generation" a try on Black, White, Yard Long and Black Eyed (Peas) beans. We shall see how it  works.

Pepper WIN

I've had great success with my pepper germination project.  5 days of sitting on damp paper towel in plastic bags at 85F worked a charm.  They're all planted out in potting mix under lights now, hopefully on the way to becoming strong plants for the new season.  I'm very, very pleased with this.

@Jim I will answer your question directly. In the mean time however, this is kind of cool. Aquaponics meets the big time on the Disney Channel. http://bit.ly/1g9yU4c

Hey Dr. Brooks...

be a sport and give us the brand name of the paper towels you are currently employing in your (successful) germination endeavors.  thanks!

Indoor Seedling Light

Now that I'm trying my hand at heated seed propagation,  the next step is to give the sprouted seeds a head start under lights.  Since there's plenty of time for another frost or two, I thought I'd set up a light in the garage for the temperature sensitive plants such as tomatoes and peppers.

I was going to do it this weekend, but I just checked the seeds that I put in on the weekend and there were several already sprouted.  Time for some lights, so a stop in at Home Depot on the way home resulted in this:

The album of photos can be seen here.
