I know the link for the best food Dave but I always think why do I have to pay shipping, I thought aquaponics was a thriving business and there should be something local in a city with 4 billion people?

If that premiumfishfood could be bought locally for under $1/lb we would be VERY interested.  I doubt they could ever get the price that low though.  Please keep us posted Sheri!

for adult tilapia I like the purina max4000

the fish don't gobble it up as fast.. It is not as high in protein.. but the cost and quality is good for me... #50 is less than $40.00

But for my non-adults, I buy #20 from premiumfishfood.

I just asked them about discounts for bulk purchases & things.

Their food is pretty expensive. To order 60lb, with shipping, it's about $125, and we have a request in to get 60lb of Purina for about 1/3 that at a feed store near here. So I asked if they sell in larger packaging, presumably for less $/lb. If they do, and if we can reduce the high shipping cost by having it delivered to local retailers, they'll be more competitive.

Let me know what you think, and I'll let you know what I find out.

Dave,

I was going to subscribe to their newsletter (they say they give coupons to subscribers), but they want all your billing info - home address, phone number, etc. TMI. So it appears their primary newletter subscribers are paying customers. Are you subscribed? If so, what kind of discounts do they offer?

They also say, "We also provide substantial discounts to various fish clubs, aquaculture associations and other groups." I'm going to contact them to see if they give discounts to the Aquaponics Gardening Comm. or what it would take to get those discounts. If they do, maybe we can work with feed stores as distribution points.

Holly

Sorry. LOL

My white Nile tilapia never stop eating. While my mixed tilapia are slow to eat. I started to steer away from the White Nile for that reason, but they are the larger.. so I am setting up a breeding tank just for them.

John,
That's what I'm doing too but my tank is still in the shade. Think about those hot summer months when the sun is already hot by 6am. So make sure you have some type of shade over your tank.

Local Phoenix tilapia feed store in town?

Thanks, Chris! I do need to take the tour again. :)

David, Holly is probably right. If your tests come out good on ammonia, nitrites & nitrates, aeration is the likely culprit. Or you have them trained to come looking for food when they see you.

Holly, if you feed them, they will grow. Just remember, the more you feed, whether they eat or not, the more ammonia you create. How often is he feeding? We feed 2x/day, but some people feed up to 4x/day. Regardless, as long as they're eating all the food in about 5 minutes, he should be fine. With our fish, when the water is warmer, they do the piranha thing, but if it's colder, they're slower to respond.
