Wow, Bob just found a mummified tilapia, about 6" long, who had jumped out of the tank a while ago. It's in a nice pose. I may just keep him around.
The plecos didn't get any of the eggs. The other tilapia did, I'm sure, but they pushed the pleco out. As soon as the eggs start to come out, the male fertilizes them quickly and the mother turns around and starts gathering them. The whole tank attacks the nest; it's like those feeding frenzies you see on TV with sharks, but it's a mass of tilapia instead. I'm not sure if their all trying to eat the eggs or if some secondary males might be trying to get their genetics into the mix as well.
Yes, you can grow squash, tomatoes, peppers, bok choy, cucumbers, etc.
Kellen,
I purchased 50 tilapia from you .. 1 jumped out of the tank (found 2 weeks later), 1 became tangled in my heater protector, and 1 died from stress, as we discussed. to this day, I still have 47 remaining. So, I know you have quality stock and techniques. let's discuss a pallet load delivery or smaller. Dave@eStory.US
Should I point my question to your partner?
Dave - thank you for the picture. Nice! And...my dad is in his 70's...so not a youngster compared to many folks. He grew up in NW Tucson and still lives in that area. He is a very interesting. Lots of wild stories on a wide range of subjects.
Sheri - good to know some personal experience. So if do get some breeding fish, I need to move to a different tank then? I have been wondering about that.
SQUASH - I love squash. Will it grow in aquaponics rocks or does that only work for stuff like lettuce? I have had poor luck with squash in my dirt container gardens in Mesa. (Well, the chickens did help the demise a few times.) If aquaponics can support squash...I might get more serious about getting the plant part going....I really love squash.
Great information, Kellen! I concur on the plecos eating eggs. They look like they're going after candy when spawning takes place. But then, so do all the other tilapia. :) I have seen plecos in my aquarium try to attach to a fish, but the fish will shake them off. They get pretty focused when they smell something good.
Cool. Maybe you could get a group buy going Dave. Saves a TON on shipping.
I want 20.. But I noticed your shipping is about a flat rate.
So maybe I will go for 50?

No problem Holly. Happy to help!
Hey Dave, I've got Blues available if you still need them. Not sure what your deadline is, but we usually ship on Thursdays (to arrive on Fridays) during the Winter months, so the 16th (to be received on the 17th) will be our next shipping day.
Thank you Dave. My dad is an interesting guy. He did his doctoral dissertation on duck weed. The scientific name is Lemna (which is what he calls it) and whenever we traveled as I was growing up if he saw any on the side of the road we would stop and pick up a sample in an old sandwhich bag in the car or empty soda can. He used to have some at his place but stopped growing it. I am excited to have some to feed my fish and watch it grow....because I have strong emotional ties to it and it fits with my new project too! Sorry to hear about the fish not coming through for you. That sounds very disappointing. I hope you get some interesting people coming to the tour.
Holly,
Your dad does not need to join the tour. just send him over
1758 N. Dragooon..
Dragoon is west of I-10
1758 is south of Grant
I had tried to order pure blue tilapia for the tour, but failed
I had tried to order more crayfish for the tour, but failed.
anyway, I am here..
