Dr. Brooks is a marine biologist who is an aquaponics advocate. He pops in & out of the Valley Permaculture Alliance forums (www.phoenixpermaculture.org), & does presentations through them on occasion. He's also very involved in community projects. An interesting man with a great brain to pick. If you google Grandma was Green you'll be able to read one of his articles.

Do backyard tilapia ponds legally have to be covered in AZ?

I use aquarium salt. 1 rounded table spoon per 5 gals.

Maynhia,

You are one great cookie. I remember you and your family, when you were down here. You just jumped in and did it.. Really, way COOL

Bob Campbell John Malone  Nice photos.  Thank you for sharing your systems and your progress.

I enjoyed the class/tour at gardenpool.org Sat.  Interesting indeed.  Did you know they don't use any filters and don't buy fish food...they feed the fish the stringy algae?  I guess the chicken poo in the pool helps the algae to grow.  It was interesting all around.

Then today, someone suggested Dr George Brooks come speak to our professional group on sustainability.  Not a place I expected to have aquaponics brought up.  Cool.  Do you know anything about Dr Brooks?

john, youtube have some great videos that shows how to fold the liners. After four grow beds I finally got the hang of it! which is pretty easy... now that I followed the directions to the T.

Thanks for the input Bob.

I spent some time yesterday playing with a piece of paper as a model, trying to figure out how to fold the liner so that I don't have to cut it, and so it doesn't leak.  I'm pretty sure it's not going to be as easy with the liner as it is with paper, but at least I've got a plan.  I'll be very certain to check all my edges.  Thanks for the heads-up.

I'm going to wrap the liner over the edge of the tank and staple it to the outside.  If that doesn't work, or looks a bit flimsy (and as you can see, I don't do flimsy!) I'll screw a trim strip all the way around the top edge of the tank, clamping the liner down.

I thought about putting insulation on the inside of the tank, and I still think it's a good idea, but I've over-engineered this thing already.  I need to stop inventing and start growing!   I can always empty the tank, remove the liner and put insulation on the inside at a later date if I find it to be crucial.

Another weekend, another baby step forward...
