Bob

the fish do not care about folds..

but we all understand about do-over.. I have done do-overs too often.

Life is an experiment.

I have to wonder with a handle like "Dave the Talapia Guy" .. is he knowledgeable or not. I hope a good judge will go.

Prepper.. We all should do some preparing. I like the way Sheri is doing it.

I was wrong to say that the cut is not necessary.   The video shows the best way to make a neat liner, but when you get into deep proportions where the sides are chest high, the real world meets the prefect world and things are not so simple.

After thinking more about this I would make the suggestion that you make the folds along the long side and leave the cut undone until you have filled the tank.  When you are certain that the liner is in a good place then make the corner cut and fold down the last side.

I must be crazy, but I'm thinking about draining the tank and refolding the liner.  With so much stuffed into the narrow end it does not look as good as I had wanted it to look, and I have not compromised on anything so far.

I started the cycling process on Monday, but I can simply take the fish tank out of the loop and go between the sump and the grow bed.  I'm trying to get a fast start with a product made in Tucson called Aqua Gold.  Has anyone else used this before?

If anyone's interested, there's a free aquaponics class tonight. I don't know any more about it than this:

Thursday March 1st, 5pm to 7pm.
Merchant Firearms
4647 E. CHANDLER BLVD #4

RSVP to tukeeprepper@mydsmbook.com to reserve a seat.

Tukee Prepper (puts out a monthly prepper newsletter) is facilitating the class. Dave the Talapia Guy (Aquaponics/Hydroponics Consultant), will be the guest speaker. He'll bring a live set up, as well as go through the process of building one, for those who are inclined to do so. He will discuss the basics of owning your own personal system, as well as a Q&A session.

Bob thank you have your blog on my desktop

My son has a deep trough at the CEAC, not as deep as your trough. I bought him pond liner seam glue because he wanted a liner that did not have folds. I think your way is great. Take care of the fish and the fish will take care of you. Kudos

your expert trough and tilapia people up there do not know as much as you people doing the work. Great job and thank you all for sharing.

There is a good video at http://www.friendlyaquaponics.com/support/trough-videos/ that shows how to install a liner including the fold.

That's an easy trough to lay liner in.  My fish tank is 3' wide and 4' deep.  I will admit I have not tried this, but after finishing my tank it occurred to me that instead of folding into the end it would have been much better to have folded the excess on to the long side.

Had he been doing a deep tank he would have been left with way too much material to fold it like he did in the video.  I don't see a problem with making those cuts, but a simple fold would also work, and it would allow for correction if anything was out of place.

With 48" to fold across 36" I had to make several laps.  This caused the folds to become bunched up. My ends are thick and unsightly, but my fish tank is done and there are no leaks, so there is no way I'm going to do it again to make a video, but I wish I had thought of this before, and this is what I want to pass on to others.

The important thing is to follow the edge from one side all the way to the other making sure that the entire edge is on top and not below the water line.

Thanks Kent.   Doesn't look too hard when an expert does it.

I should be able to do that.  This weekend will be the test.

Sheri, thanks for taking the time to research that for me. Guess I'm doing something right.

Bob thanks for sharing the Coolerado info, it has inspired me to look at cooling my water with a new method.

Bob, could you please do a write up on how to fold a liner.  I know I'd appreciate it, and I'm sure others would benefit from your experience.
