Bob, I wonder if they are hooking this up to a grow bed.  thx for the tips.  really great to know!  i think i'd like to raise tilapia and catfish. 

we'll tamp dirt down, but in my backyard it's honestly mostly rock- caliche, anyway, once i dig a foot or less down.  not even sure how we're gonna dig this thing out.  it's either gonna take weeks by hand or i need to figure out which machine home depot will rent me that will go through rock/caliche.  getting the pool put in first so if i can figure out the exact pond situation i can see if the excavating company wouldn't charge me an arm and a leg to dig out a pond, while they're here.  thx, again!

This picture presents a good opportunity to talk about how to form the pond.  The shelf in this pond should be wider.  Make it wide enough to stack rocks up to the top and still have room left over for potted plants.  It should also incline toward the outer edge so the pots do no slip off and fall into the deeper part of the pond.  When Koi grow larger they play very rough along the edges and your pots need to be securely placed on the shelf with rocks around them, This pond is not deep enough.  3' absolute minimum.

Maybe they did not want a stream, but the dirt removed can be used to create height for a stream.  One caution though.    If you build a stream on the dirt too soon it will settle.  Be sure to tamp the dirt down and let it settle before placing the liner on top,

2. John, Nice radishes. I also enjoyed the photos of your system. I've had some problems with cucumber beetles. Challenging for bio control. Anyone else seen them?

3. 8 Seats left for the fall aquaponics class at Mesa Community College. AGS166 Aquaculture (name will change to aquaponics June 24, 2014)

4. Photo 1. Just messing around. I wanted to see how much lettuce (and salad mix) I could grow on a 2 x 2 raft in 6 weeks. Total harvest over that time 8.14lbs

Well hopefully I can get a few fry out of this season. We'll see.

Watching the colors change on the males is kind of neat. I have one super huge aggressive one that is completely white with some red around the face. The fish are constantly breaching as well.

This weeks big winner is the cucumber fruit that are developing. This is the first year I've managed to have any level of success with cucurbits. I was worried that there were no bees for pollinating, but this morning I notice three bees in a single squash flower.

good to know Jeff, that's the way I've been doing it too. 

Too many times the females will swallow the babies, which is really sad...
