My thanks to everyone who signed up, the aquaponics class at Mesa Community College is now full. See you in August 2014!
Glad to hear the little fry are doing well John. The little guys guys swim between tanks through the siphon bridges and intermingle with the larger fish in my indoor system. They seem to co-habitate without issue there so I'm not surprised by their good fortune in your lage tank. The only canibalization I have ever witnessed has been the 1-2" fish eating the 1/4" fish.
@ Jeff S
Between 2" and 3"
Big enough to survive the rough and tumble of playing with the grown-ups, but I'm trying to be nice.
John, How big are the fingerlings?
I was a little less than careful when I put the fingerlings in to their new cage and a couple escaped in to the main tank.
OK - let's see how long they last playing with the big boys. The big fish are well over 14" long, and I expected the 2" fingerlings to be a quick snack.
It's been nearly a week and my t intrepid juniors are still swimming around, no problems at all. I probably don't need the fish cage for the size they are, but since I've got it, they can grow a bit bigger before taking their chances in the big wide tank.
Fish separation = cage
I just purchased a bunch of fingerlings from Jim Troyer (thanks Jim) and wanted to keep them separate from the very large tilapia that I currently have in my tank. Not wanting to go to the trouble of a aquarium, pump, filter, etc, etc, I decided to go with a fish cage in my main tank.
Came up with a bunch of designs and then discovered a collapsible laundry basket at a local Big Lots for ~$5. Attached a couple of empty plastic bottles inside the top rim so it'd float and 'Voila!', instant fingerling fish cage. It works wonderfully well.
my kid was scooping out little fish from the FT and I decided to throw in a broken clay pot and a gallon jug that floated so i threw a rock in so it would sink. I looked in to see if it sank and saw the rock on top of the fish. could i have killed the fish? i thought they would be faster than that. trying to decide if i should feed it to the chickens or eat it. was our biggest fish. not sure how many pound, but plenty for a good meal. i'm leaning toward not killing it since we're not sure. anyone ever have their chickens eat raw fish? thx!
Just a note re water loss in Deep Water Culture.
My DWC culture with 42ft raft space is loosing between 12 & 15 gallons per day.
We've got babies! Tilapia. The person who sold me the AP system off of Craigslist also sold us two fishtanks from a pet store. prob 20 gallons-i'd have to check to see. off to the pet store to get a pump or two to try to save some fishies. raising fish in a small tank in the garage like that, do i need a filter or do i just use the same water from the fishtank without filtering it? since the veggies in the growbeds filter our water it seems I will need to rig something up. I am trying to save fish before they get eaten. any tips on saving fish? my kids didn't have a prob scooping 20 or so out so a little net and we should be able to save plenty. then do i feed them crushed tilapia food? how often and when do i start feeding them? thx for any tips!
