The fish who's scales were coming off on the side died yesterday.  forgot to check if it was a male or female.  next time i'll try moving it to the FT or creating a better place to hide

BTW I was following another thread here yesterday where there was a debate about carbonates, bicarbonates, and hydroxides. It was a continuous banter of many detailed opinions. I finally commented that while participation was great I doubt I'd get that much response if I posted my fish were dying and I needed advice.

@John, Some time back my large Tilapia had a similar problem, one day they were fine the next the water was yucky and the fish looked like they were on deaths door.

Up til then I never used an air pump but had recently started turning off the water pump at night to preserve heat. The fish looked to be gasping at the surface so I added an air pump and voila overnight the water cleared and you'd never know the was a problem. I'm guessing a DO problem.

The higher the water temp the lower the DO it can hold.  Fingerlings do not require as much to survive compared to the large fish.

on another note.  Does anyone know of a good local source (phoenix valley) for Hydroton?  wanting to use that but am not liking the price of what i can purchase online.

Fish die off. Very sad.

This week most of my large 2 year old tilapia have died, several a day. I'm pretty sure it's due to the heat, but am looking for some answers. The water, which is usually crystal clear became murky and the fish went off their food.

Last night I bought an air pump to replace the one that went out on me months ago.  I'm working on the theory that the higher temperatures resulted in lower dissolved oxygen and the caused the deaths.

This morning I did an 80% water change, but that didn't seem to help the fish that were struggling.   I decided to harvest a couple of fish that looked poorly.

I've only got 4 or 5 large fish left, from an original count of 20+, in the tank and one of those looks a bit below par.

The funny thing is, the 70 2" fingerlings haven't been touched at all.  They're happy, hungry and swimming around like mad.

Any suggestions?

I have a fish in my sump who hangs out by the pump.  his/her scales are all peeled off the side of his/her side.  I imagine he/she is hiding out and one of the other 2 fish are doing this to him/her, or is the peeling from the pump?  Should I put him/her in the fishtank with the other 9 or so fish or will he/she be more in danger in there?  I also have a fishtank that is not being used in the garage.  i guess I could get a pump and put him/her in there while s/he has time to heal?  thx
