I'm definitely not feeding mine enough but all my system can stand right now. Making big changes in October to grow fish faster and more plants.
Harvested our first fish today from the "To Feed a Family" experiment. There darker fish appears to be a blue/nile hybrid (Oreochromis niloticus x O. aureus) and the lighter colored hybrid appear descended from the famous Rocky Mountain Whites of years gone by.
Statistics: Stocked May 27, 2014
Avg wt: 55g 1.94 oz
Today's weight Darker fish 600g 1.32 lbs
Last sampled 9/8/2014 510g 1.12 lbs
Lighter fish 515g 1.134 lbs
Not bad for about 17 weeks of growth but 681g (1.5 lbs) is preferable.
I can't stand that it's keeping us in the house. anyone else having a skeeter problems. I'm wondering if the skeeters are drawn to our AP system and I tend to think they are, or r they everywhere right now? Do any of u use mosquito fish and find it helpful to lessen the skeeters in the yard? the tank is topped off with a screen door so I'm not sure the fish would help-,maybe I'd have to leave the door up so that the skeeters can go close to the water? do the fish eat them when the mosquitos land on the water? thx!
I found a pretty useful thermometer for my outside aquaponics fish tank. This dual electronic thermometer keeps high and low temps for a week. Battery operated and intended for outdoor use, it lets me keep an eye on high and low temperatures. Reasonable price also helps.

For Phoenix area folks, the fish store Phoenix Tropical Fish Inc. stocks blue tilapia most of the time. They had a tank full of nice size fingerlings the other day when I stopped by. They do keep a waiting list if out of stock. Google or find them on Yelp for address and hours. They are in a residential area so you will need a map or GPS to find them.
i've heard of a few of us not being successful with squashes in AP. I read that if the flowers aren't pollinated on time the flowers may die or the harvest won't grow large at all. here is an excellent article i found that will help on pollination in case u don't have bees in your garden:
