@Samson - Or Painting.

here are some pics of my redone shade structure since it was cooler out this weekend (apologies about the messy yard).

Hey Pat,

I've seen the food grade 275 gallon totes being offered for $110-$175 and the 330 gallon for $150 - $225. No delivery either. The non food grade are a bit cheaper. I could have saved myself some time if I had purchased a precut IBC tote from tank and barrel in Apache Junction: http://www.tanknbarrel.com/index_files/Page339.htm but that would have taken away all the fun of learning... like never grinding while wearing shorts and flipflops.

The going price for a single 275 IBC tote in Phoenix is $125, There is a single company buying up most of the available totes and then reselling them.  I was able to get them cheaper from this company because my Park N Swap up bringing kicked in.  And yes it was still highway robbery.  The blue 55 drums are more competitive and can be gotten fairly cheap.

 Samson..Are IBC totes going for that much out there? Here I pay $60 each and they deliver.

Dr George.. I was looking at my tilapia's dorsal fin figuring a pointed fin was male with a rounded one female. The only time, I could see a colr difference were with actively breeding fish and since my own circumstances does not lend itself for me to see individuals until I net them, I am at a distinct disadvantage.  Is the shape of the dorsal fin reliable or not?

Greetings Bayy. Tilapia genetics is so messed up due to frequent crossbreeding between strains and species it is very difficult to judge sex by color. The colors also shift according to the background they are against and/or their mood. However I have noticed that many farmers as they gain skill in working with their fish over time can begin to tell. For example, for the fish I have now, females preparing to breed, or that are brooding tend to take on a greenish tinge with black stripes. Again not universally true.

Hey guys I've been away for a bit working on my upsized system. At first I wanted to build a system from the ground up using lumber, pond liner and such but ended up scoring a food grade IBC tote with a camlock valve for $50 from a hydroponic gardener that moved out of state. The tote was near mint condition so I know I made out like a bandit on this. I picked up another 275 gallon tote for $110 which came with a butterfly vavle.

I've been researching, going over all the advice and suggestions you have shared with me and I am happy to report that I am near the completion of my AP project and I wanted to thank you all for your input and insight. I am now working on the radial filter and hopefully should have the system up and running within the next two weeks. I've also been researching UV filters and wanted to get your tank on that.

I am also working with arduino controllers to automate portions of my system. I'll probably setup an arduino webserver in the future and develop dash boards that will aggregate the metrics and make it mobile friendly. I'm a planner/researcher type so it takes me a while to commit to an idea.

I am also registered for the conference and hope to see and meet all of you soon. I would still like visit with anyone and review and discuss your system and experience. I live near the south mountain area but I am open to any area.

I think I am over thinking my system is there any one in the east valley or surrounding area that would be willing to show there system or building or working on theres and would like some help, I am stuck in the fish stock tank and havent built any thing yet. Brain fart or brain dead, I wanna get an idea of what it is I am doing by looking at it as to just pictures and videos. I also need to know if any one else is raising Blue nile Talapia? I have about 60 fry ranging from a half inch to 3 1/2". I have two that are 3' to 3 1/2" all fry born at the same time, but my two biggest one has dark stripes and the other is more of a solid color whitish silvery color? Is the Darker one a male and the silvery one a female? Or vise versa?
